Is it too soon to point out the apparent discrepancy in having one first-round pick who isn't standing out who we want to see make it, while the other first-round pick who might actually be performing in practices and games...whoa, wait a damn minute -- that guy's got to get sent back?
Too soon? |

If Morin turns out to be the next Pavel Kubina, that would be swell. |

Grossmann is too good and too expensive to go to the AHL. |

not crazy about the 55 though. too much of a linebacker number. Markov pulled it off but Morin is too tall, imo.
thoughts? similar concerns? - Crimsoninja
Im diggin the 55. It means that I can take my old 55 jersey and put a new name on it. Problem solved.

What will decide who gets sent back, and who doesn't, is who the Flyers feel is NHL ready and who isn't. Who is good enough to make the team, and who isn't. |

Well if this is the case, no I wouldn't.
But does he beat out Mez, Gus, Gervais, and Grossmann for that 4th best trophy?
Morin is not a #2 pair NHL defensman right now no matter what way you slice it, in my opinion.
That being said, sure- if Laviolette- for whatever reason- used him as a #4 defenseman on the special teams then sure I guess I'd be ok with that. I can't help but being reminded of Luke Schenn though. - Giroux_Is_God
I'm with you. Unless he blows me out of the water I'd rather see him go back to the Q and have a big year. |

So they will send Meszaros and Gervais down to the AHL and sit Gustaffson as a healthy scratch?

Whatever they do. I think he'll get two games. Pretty much what I thought when they drafted him at 11. They'll want a brief look. |

I want him to go back no matter what. I'd rather have him develop AT LEAST one more year rather than be mesmerised by a handful of preseason games and ruin him. |

Quick question: if a player plays only a few games (2 here), do you subtract that from the total tryout games he has, or does that preclude any/all tryout games in future seasons? |

According to a few of the articles I've read on Laughton he has 9 games this year again so it's not cumulative apparently, it's season by season. |

I'm saying that a player like Jason Akeson, once they get labeled as an undrafted player, has an exceedingly difficult time in shedding that label, while guys like Scott Laughton always get the benefit of the doubt, mainly because they are first-round picks but also because of the perception that because they are good players defensively, that means they are more "NHL ready." - AllInForFlyers
Pretty astute point.
Justin Bourne (ex-pro) described encountering this particular phenomenon during his time in pro training camps... the high draft picks are paraded down the primrose path, given all the breaks, advantages and time/attention from coaches/management. Lower-round picks and undrafted players can expect a much steeper climb, and most never even get a fair shot at the show.
We'd all like to believe that personnel decisions are made based on merit, but GMs' and scouts' careers live and die by those top-round picks... and since they're also the initial arbiters of if/when a prospect is ready or not, it's no wonder that most 1st-rounders get repeated shots at making the team that drafted them, and most don't have to wait long for that first shot. Even if they fail with their initial team, you can bet there are plenty of other GMs willing to take a chance on a former 1st-round pick across all leagues and levels.
If a 4th-round pick or an undrafted signess fails to make the show, nobody's going to get fired over that. And in most cases, those players are never heard from again.
Fan reactions mirror this kind of valuation... 1st-round picks are fawned over and are treated with the utmost of patience and optimism, while lower-tier prospects routinely get dismissed/pigeon-holed.
I personally believe that McGinn, Akeson, and Raffl are probably more 'ready' to take on the rigors of a full NHL season than Laughton... but we all know that Laughton will have to really fall on his face hard to not be the first youngster up for promotion based purely on draft-status. |

I thought he had no games. From everything I've heard, he doesn't get a tryout this year. |
