I think Holmgren was asked this at the Town Hall Meeting and said he had no games since he played 5 last year (pro-rated tryout games per the lockout). I could be wrong though. - jmatchett383
I see.
Well that's annoying and also pretty stupid. He gets 5 games but everyone else gets 9? So everyone in Laughton's boat gets the poop end of that stick, thanks to that frustratingly asinine lockout.... |

Yep, there's too much anger and not enough crazy on the thread these days. Crims is a rare breath of fresh air although his entertainment value is low here in comparison to real life. He can bring the crazy in real life. - mayorofangrytown

Pretty astute point.
Justin Bourne (ex-pro) described encountering this particular phenomenon during his time in pro training camps... the high draft picks are paraded down the primrose path, given all the breaks, advantages and time/attention from coaches/management. Lower-round picks and undrafted players can expect a much steeper climb, and most never even get a fair shot at the show.
We'd all like to believe that personnel decisions are made based on merit, but GMs' and scouts' careers live and die by those top-round picks... and since they're also the initial arbiters of if/when a prospect is ready or not, it's no wonder that most 1st-rounders get repeated shots at making the team that drafted them, and most don't have to wait long for that first shot. Even if they fail with their initial team, you can bet there are plenty of other GMs willing to take a chance on a former 1st-round pick across all leagues and levels.
If a 4th-round pick or an undrafted signess fails to make the show, nobody's going to get fired over that. And in most cases, those players are never heard from again.
Fan reactions mirror this kind of valuation... 1st-round picks are fawned over and are treated with the utmost of patience and optimism, while lower-tier prospects routinely get dismissed/pigeon-holed.
I personally believe that McGinn, Akeson, and Raffl are probably more 'ready' to take on the rigors of a full NHL season than Laughton... but we all know that Laughton will have to really fall on his face hard to not be the first youngster up for promotion based purely on draft-status. - Tomahawk
I beleive most of this to be false. GM's are also fired when their team falters, due to questionable player decisions, such as keeping a higher draft pick on the team, when a player that was a lower draft choice, is a better choice. Just because that player was drafted higher. So it's a two way street. There's a legitimate reason why higher draft picks are given more attention and time from GM's and Coaches. They're better players, and are more likely to become solid NHL players. An Organization has a system. Lesser players go down to the AHL, where those Coaches work with those players, and give them the attention they need. That's how it works. McGinn or Raffl may certainly beat out Laughton. Akeson is a different player, who would play in a different role, so he's not really competing with Laughton for a spot. Laughton making the team is not going to be based on Draft status. That's false. |

That means you owned either a Chris Gratton jersey or a Pavel Brendl jersey, yes? - johndewar
i have a 55 markov. got it from my brother, and don't know where he got it. likely a new nameplate because it's the orange jersey from the 80s/90s. i should wear it some time. |

I much preferred it when it was hockey and fun talk and not "Who can be the most correct, haughty, and aggrandize one's self while belittling those of differing opinions." It's one thing to correct errors and another to frame others' opinions as fact and attack them while crying when the same is done conversely.
I miss the days of the Buzzgates.
I'm off. Probably should have stayed away today. I feel like I've gone from face to heel. - Flyskippy
The discussion on Laughton was Hockey talk. The above is not about Hockey. |

I've read it several times. That's all I have. Someone in the know would have to clarify. All I could do is point out the articles and that doesn't make the writers correct. - mayorofangrytown
Those writers are incorrect. Laughton used up his tryout games last Season. |

If I told you grass is green you would come up with some stupid arguement about kentucky blue grass, and yellow grass from dog pee.
... and you would argue it for 16 pages. Then tomorrow you will talk about how green the grass is today... |
