There a number of ways that the Flyers can submit their roster on Sept 30th to be Cap compliant. At the most they would risk losing a player such as Gervais or Rosehill to a Waiver claim. Which wouldn't be the end of the World. The Flyers don't have a Cap problem. They will be Cap compliant, and have the neccessary flxibility to make in Season moves. They might not have a ton of cap space to use at the deadline, but things thend to change during an NHL Season. If anybody wants to see exactly how the Flyers can easily get under the Cap, I'd be happy to show them some likely scenarios. Anybody who thinks the Flyers have a Cap problem. I'd be happy to take a look at the eividence that they can provide that shows they have a Cap problem. |

My biggest concern is that both Meszaros and Grossmann have injury concerns. Meszaros' issues have largely come over the past two years, and it's hard for me to consider his previous durability.
In Grossmann's case, he has two bad knees and is coming off a concussion. There's really no way to be sure either guy will stay healthy. - Jsaquella
To me, that's an extra reason to keep both. You trade one and the other goes down with an injury and you're into your call-ups. You sit one of the top-7 (you could rotate them as you saw fit) and if one goes down, you've got an NHL-level defenseman to slide in. |

Grossmann is tradeable. Still not sure about Mez though - PhillySportsGuy
Can't see teams lining up to deal fair value to land a guy with two wonky knees coming off a serious concussion. |

To me, that language does not refer to being able to give a player the 9 game tryout for lack of better term, two Seasons in a row. However I looked over the CBA and haven't found any language that I interpret as saying that you can't. So maybe we'll find out if they keep Laughton. - MJL
It just sucks that Laughton's tryout came during a shortened season. Would have liked to see him play 9 games instead of just 5. |

They are tight to the cap, but they will be in that situation for as long as there is a cap and Snider willingly signs the checks. Being tight to the cap isn't a crime, and if folks want to complain about it, well, they will have years to do so.
The real issue is that by utilizing the LTIR exemption from Pronger, they open themselves up to having to defer bonuses to next year's cap. They're already carrying dead cap space this year from bonuses Schenn and Couturier achieved during last season.
But, no, they don't have to trade anyone to get under the cap...but they will to avoid exceeding the upper limit by a decent margin. - Jsaquella
i'm just asking questions. seems potentially short-sighted to move a quality offensive dman - meszaros - to deal with cap issues if they don't have to. the cap will be increasing substantially next season, no? enough to deal with any bonus overages they defer because of pronger's contract?
i don't have an issue with them spending to the limit in theory..but it always seems to be a tightrope dance all the way to the end. would be nice to have some room once in awhile to deal with the curve balls that never seem to end more easily.
i'd like to keep meszaros AND grossmann. |

I think it's a stupid disagreement over a "cap overage" which they have right now, as opposed to a "cap problem," which would imply they are not able to meet the cap, which is not the case. As it stands, yes, they are exceeding the cap, but I wouldn't say they have a "problem" that they can't solve. |

Well, if the same set of rules that apply to Mark Scheifele apply to Scott Laughton, he can have another 9 game tryout. |

Maybe. Neither of them are the least bit durable at this point. I trust Grossmanns health more though. I can't tell you why though. |

I think Gus may fetch a 2nd rounder, but I feel he's more important in the grand scheme of things than a 2nd rounder. Plus, the point of dealing a dman would be for the team to get under the cap without using Pronger's LTIR.
All I'm saying is it would have to be quite a lopsided deal for me to trade Gus. - PhillySportsGuy
I think we're just starting to see Gus really develop, and it'd have to be one heck of a deal for me to think it's a good trade. |

But they've always had the room. To call up players. To acquire players at the deadline. And to acquire top Free Agents. Year after year. |

That scenario really depends on how highly you feel about Oliver Lauridsen. If you feel that Lauridsen can step in and handle a third pair role, then there's really no reason not to move Meszaros or Grossmann, if you can get value.
I'm not sold you can get value...or anything...for either right now. |

The problem is that the "cap overage" that everybody sees, is ficticious. It's not real. Cap geek does not keep the off season Cap, and it's just a projection. And it's a projection that has 10 defenseman on the roster. It's not reality. |

There is no cap problem at all Hammar. There will be someone arriving in the thread soon to make sure everyone knows there are no cap issues.
Looks as if there is a fair amount of questions marks heading into the season. As always health. As always goaltending. Not to mention there is a big hole on the third line if the Flyers decide to go the Raffl, VandeVelde route. Hopefully at this point they just put Talbot on the third line, and Laughton makes the team. - PLindbergh31

Well, except that year they had to trade Scottie Upshall and a 2nd rounder for Dan Carcillo to be able to recall Claude Giroux.
Either that was a cap move or a really poor value trade. |

Exactly right. At best, you are prob going to only have one of them available most of the year unless we are extremely lucky. I know that Emery and Mason's puck handling prowess should help keep the D more healthy, but every year someone key goes down on D, and we are looking for a dman at the TDL or earlier. If we can swing it.. keep both IMO. |

To me, Lauridsen's a guy you could call up in a pinch to provide solid defensive defense for low minutes over a span of a few games. But I don't think he's a full-time top-6 NHL defenseman right now. |

But the bottom line is that was a choice. And they could've left Giroux in the minors. But they did what they had to do to make the team better. |
