To me, Lauridsen's a guy you could call up in a pinch to provide solid defensive defense for low minutes over a span of a few games. But I don't think he's a full-time top-6 NHL defenseman right now. - jmatchett383
He's not. And Manning isn't close either. If Meszaros or Grossmann are traded just to clear up a logjam, as soon as the first injury occurs (probably game 1) you have players who aren't NHL ready in the lineup.
Already the depth has taken a hit with Bourdon not being anywhere close to playing. |

I hope so. I was hoping Bill could try to reach out to the league and get clarification on the rule.
Are we the only blog on here that constantly discusses league rules? - PhillySportsGuy
I tried to reach out to capgeek, and they refused to directly answer my question even when I presented it 3 different ways. |

They list the same bonuses. - jmatchett383
They don't list the exact money earned, or the exact amount of bonus overage. NHLnumbers is a waste of time. |

But the bottom line is that was a choice. And they could've left Giroux in the minors. But they did what they had to do to make the team better. - MJL
I think their top choice would have been to keep Upshall and call up Giroux |

correct me if i'm wrong but every team has to be under the salary cap by october 1st, BUT players CANNOT be put on LTIR before october 2nd. so you guys would be over the cap for a day past the deadline? (not sure if this is 100% true or what the consequence is, but i'm pretty sure i saw bob mckenzie tweet it a few weeks ago). |

Probably. Although Carcillo did (somehow) have 2 very exciting playoff goals. |

Well, if the same set of rules that apply to Mark Scheifele apply to Scott Laughton, he can have another 9 game tryout. - jmatchett383
I only hope before Homer makes a decision whether to keep Laughton for a 9 game tryout, he gets clearance from a league source rather than rely on what he believes is correct.
He should've learned after the league smacking him across the nose with the Pronger contract not to assume he's always reading the CBA correctly. |

Well, except that year they had to trade Scottie Upshall and a 2nd rounder for Dan Carcillo to be able to recall Claude Giroux.
Either that was a cap move or a really poor value trade. - Jsaquella
This.
That's hardly the only questionable move they've had to make to deal with limited cap space before and during a season in order to make other moves.
So yes, when day 1 comes along, they won't be exceeding the upper limit... but that doesn't mean they don't have any 'cap problems' this season and beyond. |

Yep. And had they managed the cap more effectively, they wouldn't have had to give away an asset to dump a salary.
Saying they've made no cap mistakes and always manage the cap well is just as moronic as saying that they suck at everything and can't win because they are stupid.
It's not black and white. They have made mistakes in handling the cap and monetary decisions. Overall they do a good job, but they do not always have themselves in a great position in terms of the cap.

Yes, but you can "demote" players on October 1st (or before). So they would send down whoever they needed to as a paper move, LTIR Pronger on the 2nd, and then call up the demoted players.
I feel like we explain this every day on here. |

OT, saw the highlights of the Leafs Sabres Donnybrook last night. What a gongshow that was. What was Clarkson thinking? Bernier and Miller fight? all this in a preseason game.. Imagine if Bernier brakes his hand while breaking Miller's face? Coaches couldn't have been happy about it.
Very good chance that we will face a Leafs team without Clarkson or Kessel come the season opener. THe leafs will be one of the teams that are hit/miss to make the playoffs this year, and a crap start will put them behind the 8 ball. |

The Flyers can get under the cap on October first by placing Brayden Schenn in the AHL. They can put Pronger on LTIR at 5 PM on October first, get the full value of his LTIR exemption and recall Schenn at that point and be compliant and utilize Pronger's full injury cushion. |

Demote waiver-eligible players, then take LTIR, then bring waiver-eligibles back -- Flyers apparently are not the only team contemplating this kind of move to get cap compliant. |

Teams have to be Cap compliant on Sept 30th. Playes can be placed on LTIR from that point forward. The Flyers will have no problem becoming cap compliant on 9/30. |

I'm still not even sure the Flyers trade Richards and Carter if not for the cap problems the Bryz deal created. |

I know the cap is going up next season, my question is the Flyers do not have any goaltenders under contract next year. So what happens if
A. The goaltenders don't pan out this year
B. They play very well, and are in line for big pay raises
I know Timonen's and Meszaros contracts are off the books this year, where does the money come from next year to find Timonen's replacement, account for Giroux's nearly 5 million dollar cap increase, and sign two goaltenders? |

Bill,
Isn't there a serious injury concern with Grossman? Last years' concussion sounded bad. The last thing the Flyers need is another permanently injured defensemen. It wouldn't be the worst thing to sell now. Way are your thoughts about his future with concussions? |

Schenn and Couturier. Schenn has a large cap hit because the Kings don't know how to negotiate ELCs |

Detroit is actually in worse cap shape than the Flyers.
That's where I take objection in the blind Holmgren bashing, as well as the blind Holmgren defense.
I think overall he's a good GM, far from perfect or being the best GM in the league. |
