They would rather have Zatkoff, Smirnoff or Popov over Bryzgalov!
- BiggE
You know damn well that Andrei Popov was a left wing, not a goalie. Come on now. |

I have no problem with the Gill signing. Low-risk contract and if all goes exactly as planned, he will play 0 minutes this year. - jmatchett383
Exactly. Gill is just insurance in case Grossmann goes down and Lauridsen isn't ready to step in. He costs next to nothing and is only signed for one year. You know you are in Flyerland when everyone is getting wound up over nothing!

Did Gill and Gustafsson also make the roster by default? - MJL
Kind of. I mean, Gustafsson essentially had an NHL spot handed to him over the summer, and I didn't see Gill do much to earn that contract in the preseason. |

With that team, it really shouldn't matter who's in goal as long as they're ECHL-caliber. At least until it's the playoffs. |

I don't know why anyone would have a problem with it. Let alone call the GM incompetent for the signing. |

Double-digit goal totals in his first five seasons. - bradleyc4
Yes, but not exactly a poster child for the type of "non-meathead" player you're talking about. Shore was a certifiable nut case.
From his wiki page:
"During their first practice with the Bruins, Shore strutted back and forth in front of Coutu and Cleghorn. Coutu body-slammed Shore, head-butted, elbowed, and tried to torment Shore. Coutu picked up the puck and made a rush at Shore. The two players collided. Shore held his ground and Coutu flew through the air violently crashing to the ice. Shore's ear was almost ripped off but he barely noticed it. Coutu was out cold and was out of commission for a week. Shore visited several doctors who wanted to amputate the ear, but found one who sewed it back on. After refusing anesthetic, Shore used a mirror to watch the doctor sew the ear on."

Meh, for an 8th defenseman I don't mind his age. I just don't think he did anything to earn that contract in the preseason, except show up on time. |

Gustafsson earned his spot due to his play in the past, and his future potential based on that, and you know what you're getting in Gill. |

Actually, he's the perfect Penguin goalie.
Last 2 years regular season:
11/12 - 92.0 SV%, 2.49 GAA
12/13 - 92.0 SV%, 1.93 GAA
Last 2 years regular playoffs:
11/12 - 86.5 SV%, 4.34 GAA
12/13 - 83.8 SV%, 5.45 GAA

Isn't Gus the 7th dman? Wouldn't he step in if there is an injury? |

Zatkoff is a Miami of Ohio guy. Pretty good goalie. Was in the Kings system for a while, stuck behind Bernier and Quick. |

Maybe they want to save him for the games where they'd be prepared to use him for more than 6-8mins? If Rosehill's in the lineup, that 4th-line is not getting a regular shift. - Tomahawk
Did I miss something? I don't remember Rosehill playing bad last season. Its not like throwing Shelly or Fedoruk out there. I think Rosehill-Hall-Rinaldo can be a very effective energy line. |

He'd play in spots.
Like, an injury during warm up or during that day's practice or something, he'd likely suit up and play. If it was a longer term injury, he'd probably play until someone (Ollie or whoever) was able to get down here from ADK. |

Gus is the 7th, but if Grossmann goes down they would probably try Gill because he plays the same style/role.

Gervais is capable of being that guy. Does it kill the Flyers signing Gill? Not really, but there is zero need for him. |
