So there has to be tiers now to the Flyers 7th, 8th, 9th dmen?
My gosh, if anyone goes down Gus would be first up. Quite frankly if Meszaros keeps looking like a shell of himself I would expect Gus will be in there in short order. - PLindbergh31
Gus and Gill are just very different players. If a puck mover goes down to injury, Like Streit, obviously Gus will dress no question. But if a shot blocker goes down, Gill seems the obvious choice to fill in. I think the point is that the Flyers have options and Gus isn't necessarily, despite being considered the "7th D-man" on the depth chart, the automatic net guy in line. |

So was Dave Schultz. - johndewar
Schultz actually scored 20 goals one season and took a regular shift on the 3rd line of championship team. He was a bit more than just a goon.

That's my point. These guys could play.
Guys like Rosehill and Rinaldo (and countless) others serve no purpose in the NHL other than their fists. They're not hockey players, they're brawlers. - bradleyc4
Theyre not Hockey players in your opinion. Which you're entitled to, but in my opinion, they are Hockey players. Rinaldo is a player that was used at times last year in defensive situations playing against top lines. He has developed his game more and more every year.

Rinaldo is more of an agitator than a brawler and he draws a lot of penalties. He also throws big hits that can and do change momentum. I would't lump him in with Rosehill. |

Yup, I know.
I was making the point that just because a guy was a scorer in junior hockey doesn't absolve that player from being a one-dimensional face breaker in the NHL.
Schultz is often portrayed as the poster boy of the 70's goon, so when he threw out Semenko's junior numbers, I felt obliged to mention Schultzie's surgeon like hands in junior hockey. |

Thanks to Gill, Kimmo and Streit. Pronger is included too, I guess. |

I think Zac has more hockey in him too. I don't even think Rosehill is totally unable to play, but let's be real here. The guy's averaged under six minutes a game at the NHL level, he's a time out on skates when he's on his game. |

Rinaldo definitely has a lot more skill and speed than people give him credit for. Can't say the same about Rosehill. Haven't seen him play enough. |

Rosehill is what he is. A depth forward who can also fill the enforcer role. |

They may be averaging in Pronger too.
However with Couturier, both Schenns, Voracek, Giroux, Simmonds, Laughton, Rinaldo, Gus and Mason all being 25 or younger, I'm not that concerned.

The one dimensional goon started in the 80s, When the league absorbed the WHA in 1979 and went to 21 teams, they were still getting nearly all of the players from Canada and their just weren't enough NHL caliber players available. It seemed every team in the 80s had one or 2 of those type of guys. - BiggE
Goons started in the 80's was perfected in the 90's declined in the 00's and became obsolete in the 10's.
But back to the point that this started from someone saying 70's was old time hockey then the rebuttal that old time hockey meant a time before hockey was violent.... There was violence before the invent of goons and the bullies. Hockey was always a "dirty" rough game. Lots of slashes, pokes, trips. If it seemed more elegant its only because the game was slower. Less body protection meant lighter hits. And players today are just so much more athletic. |

Disagree on Zack Rinaldo...he has continued to develop as a 3rd/4th line player...I think he is only like 190...so he is not one of these "big" goons...yes, he drops the gloves, but he has a ton of hockey skill too... |

Rosehill is like Shelley... his real value is suiting up as the 8th-dman in practice, and cheerleading with his suit on between periods and after games... and occasionally getting into a hockey fight. |

Because he looked absolutely terrible against the Leafs. |

Then really, stop watching the games until he gets fired. Why watch this horribly coached wreck of a team?
You seem like the kid who couldn't wait to scream, "BRYZ YOU SUCK!" after he made a nice kick save int he season opener last year. Not a damn thing's happened, yet you just want to complain about a problem from year's past. - jmatchett383
Actually i supported Bryz...I think they should get rid of lavy because no goalie has a chance playing behind this system. Ill watch this team because i love hockey and the flyers org...doesnt mean i have to agree blindly to what the coach is preeching to these guys, |
