Goons are an ineffective deterrent for stopping rats like Kaleta and Avery from "running around" is the point. Even without the instigator, or a code, a goon would just get piled on by the other team the second they went after a non-goon, as we saw from the Kessel/Scott situation, if the linesmen didn't end the fight right away already.

There really isn't any situation where Rosehill would be able to take Kaleta aside and beat the living pulp out of him uncontested for sticking an elbow or knee out at Giroux.

So if the deterrent isn't deterring, what's the point? That's pretty much why most of the heavies have been flushed out of the league.

That's where the disconnect is. Nobody, or at least I'm not saying that an enforcer is going to stop a Kaleta or an Avery from running around. That's not why you put an enforcer in the lineup in my opinion.

Of course the answer is obvious. I'd like to see enforcers totally removed from the game. But as long as there is a Colton Orr in the opposition lineup. I want the Flyers to have an enforcer to counter with.

I want them to find a way to make the Colton Orr's a liability to carry on the roster so no one has a reason to argue this point. I'm just tired of the marginally or less talented goon take a contract slot or 4th line spot away from someone with greater hockey skill.

There's a logic to dressing the more talented, dedicated hockey player over the "goon" that screams up the back of my neck every time I see them on the ice or signed to a contract.

There's a place for them. It's the ECHL or the AHL. When they're the best player not on the roster let me know. I'll drive them to the show.

I share in the belief that the Staged fights between enforcers just to see who has the bigger you know what, is a waste of time, and that culture should be removed from the League as fast as possible. But there are other situations that come up during a Season.

You can state my argument doesn't make sense until you're blue in the face. You're still hung up on an enforcer preventing something from happening. That's what makes zero sense. That has never been the case. And if you think that is the argument being made, then you aren't getting the argument being made.

Really it's all relative. I think without an instigator penality you would see rosehill pummel kaleta for injuring Giroux. Both get 5. You dont want to get pummeled, dont do stupid poop. And that goes for the stars of the league too. If crosby wants to hack both of giroux's wrists, be ready to answer for it.

That might work in theory, but like I said, in practice it's not how it would go down.

You think 19 Penguins are going to stand idle and watch as Rosehill grabs Crosby and proceeds to fill his mouth with his own teeth? You think the the four on-ice officials would stand by, too?

Plus, with the heavy pads, mandatory visors, and shock-absorbent helmets, it doesn't require nearly the same courage to save your teammates as it might have in the 70's when goonery was actually effective.

I think the point is, you cant take goons out of the sport without taking fighting out of the sport. They have tried over and over again. Instigator penality. Fighting 3 times suspensions. under 2 minutes in a game suspension. Unless you completely get rid of fighting, teams will always find a way to dress a goon. And as long as a team finds a way to dress a goon, other teams will dress goons.

THEN WHAT IS THE (frank)ING POINT?

That's the question I want answered. If an enforcer isn't going to stop it and protect the skilled players, then what purpose does it serve to dress one?

If a player on the bench can wait a shift or two to stick up for his teammate, then he can skate away when a goon wants to fight him. Both come down to picking your spot and doing what is needed to win a game.

And if you don't dress one, what does the other one do?

That's one of the valid arguments against not playing an enforcer. I think Orr played 2 minutes and change last night in the game. But it's more about having the player available in case something happens, then it is having the player because something is likely to happen.

Yeah, I don't see the downside to not having a goon in that scenario. Except that you might score another goal in those four minutes.
