Which means his left foot has already left the ice and he is elevating upward. I have no problem with the hit because he didn't touch his head.

Yup the NHL needs to:

a) Take out fighting
b) Take out hitting and/or any body contact
c) Stop allowing goaltenders to move
d) Penalize for playing defense

When a hit like that even has a discussion whether it's legal or not, there's a major problem.

Turn the NHL into the NFL, maybe people will follow the sport then.

absolutely clean. downie cleaned up his act here in tampa and has been great in colorado. feet left after contact cuz josi went down. hes got to keep his head up this is the NHL. you are taught that in peewee. and its josi... not like he was really going to beat the avs... if hes going to injure someone he would have done it to one of their better players.

Dumbest thing Ive ever seen posted on this site. First off, Josi is our Suter replacement and is already better than Suter at that age. He has filled the shoes wonderfully and is arguably one of Nashville's best player. Secondly, and this is to everyone, if the hit was clean in the first place, why was he is the box? It was a charge, he DID target the head, and he DID leave his feet when the contact was initiated. Thirdly, does it matter who he does this to? Its a dirty, irresponsible, play that doesn't belong in the league. I'm all for checking, but that is a dirty dirty play by downie. Josi's only fault was trusting other players to make the respectful decision, something downie is clearly incapable of. It infuriates me how Shannahan is ignoring this, thats what small market teams are going to have to deal with, if no one cares, he's not going to be suspended. What a joke. Weber should have broken the glass with Downie's face.

Eklund is mistaking something that might be frowned on (or immoral) in the game with something that is illegal. Just because the hit was big -- and probably not necessary -- doesn't make it illegal.

This is where hockey's on ice justice comes into play. The next time the Avs play the Preds, I fully expect the Preds to try to get back at Downie. I just hope it is done within the rules of the game. The Avs better keep their heads up, that's for sure.

If you are going to allow hits like this then fighting absolutely must remain in the game and the instigator rule abolished...or someone is going to get killed.

Technically I guess the hit was okay, but Downie was clearly hitting to injure and he could have gotten the job done with much less of a hit. He also completely took himself out of the play. Downie failed miserably on the play, he was on his stomach behind the net, totally out of the play while the rush went up the ice...all to get in a huge hit that could have just been a big hit.

If you remove fighting from the NHL then get used to these types of hits. The league will be full of Downies, Kaletas, Torres...eses, etc.
