They were also the best at puck possession. Not top-10. The best. - bradleyc4
Boston was the best at a lot of things, which is why they're a top team. I'm just simply pointing out that hitting, and hitting a lot is a good thing, not a bad thing. And that top possession teams can also be high up in the League in hits. So what conclusion we've arrived at, is not that hits and blocked shots are bad, but that the Flyers spend too much time in their own end, and not enough in the opposition's end. That is one of the big problems. Not hits and blocked shots. |

I'll defer to you on this...it just looked exactly the same and that would be on the plyrs. - isaiah520
They had different looks on both the breakouts and zone entries. He couldn't make it work with this roster. |

Maybe Berube is the hold players accountable guy and Paddock the systems X and O's guy? |

So Mullen stays? I have no issue with that. PP has been solid in recent years. |

Look at the goal on the Schenn giveaway. The Center, Couturier is coming back deep for a short outlet pass in the middle. Remind you of anything? |

Yeah, no clue how it's going to work.
Maybe Berube has a good plan for this team.
I know one thing, like I mentioned earlier, regression is going to be his best friend and likely make his impact look more than what it really is. |

It would have been even more ironic if they replaced him with Paul Maurice. |

Yeah, but what good does it do to separate a guy from the puck when if you shoot it, it's going to catch glass, and if you pass it, it's either behind the guy, in his skates, or two feet in front of him -- everywhere but on the tape? - AllInForFlyers
and that is what I said. hits and shot blocking are just 2 aspects to the game. obviously there needs to be much more but thats not to say they are worthless |

I don't think blocked shots are a bad thing to be leading the league in as long as your very low in shots on goal.
If you are high in both departments, teams are shootings a lot of pucks at your net. It also means the blocked shots are more a product of the total, not the team being good at it. |

Anyone here have a clue as to what philosphy Berube has from a systems point of view? - MBFlyerfan
Not sure this answers your question, but he's played under:
Young Ken Hitchcock in Kamploops,
John Paddock in Hershey (the irony),
Mike Keenan in PHI,
Paul Holmgren (!) in PHI,
Dave King in CGT,
Terry Murray in WSH,
Jim Schoenfeld in WSH,
Ron Wilson in WSH,
Roger Neilson in PHI,
and one John Stevens w/ the Phantoms.
Aggregate that experience/inspiration and you get... ? |

It's almost impossible for us to perform worse really. So far with preseason and reg season we have 1 split squad win.. |

Not saying that hitting and blocked shots are bad, just saying that being good at those things does not correlate to winning as well as puck possession. - bradleyc4
absolutely. not opposed to hits or blocked shots, but the orientation for more success should be possession and a system that promotes it. |

They're not good at enough at getting the puck through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone with possession.
Yes, obviously if you're hemmed in your own zone, you're going to rack up hit and blocked shot totals. It's all connected. But Rinaldo has a track record at not being good with the puck. And I don't buy into the myth of "momentum changing hits". |

So what's Berube's system that will be so vastly different from Lavy's? Or are we thinking Flyers will bring someone else in after a few games for HC? |
