They aren't expected to be elite players, and possibly not top line players. But they will be very good players.

What are they expected to be?

On the bright side, we're one step closer to Riley Cote being Flyers head coach. It's just a matter of time

As you said, defense is a team game. Just one weak link and the entire thing is vulnerable to break.

And who's blaming Streit solely for the goal? He was on the ice for two bad goals... which was the OP's point to begin with.

- Tomahawk

The poster who made the original point in the conversation, which was that Streit was directly responsible for 2 goals against. You responded with the Bolland goal. Which clearly happened due to a number of breakdowns.

Teams that play good team defense, cover up for a breakdown. Not compound it by making others. Cover the slot and the dangerous areas, and Kulemin knocking Streit off the puck won't amount to much.

Thank God.. Enough with the free wheeling score fests we've been part of hahahah

Its ironic, but when this team plays better defensively, they score more.

With Grossmann and Hartnell hitting guys into Mason last night, I think it's evident the Flyers' players have picked their goalie: Ray Emery.
- Flyskippy

I disagree. I think those hits were to defend him (sorta).
I'd give them some more time to shake out both goalies.
I like Mason.

Hahah I knew someone would say this.. I know that's how it works, but I wanted to poke fun at our lack of scoring.

Taken 5th overall and considered untouchable until the Flyers offered Mike Richards. The players taken before him, as well as the 2 taken after him, have become top-flight players. I guess we define "elite" differently.
- jmatchett383

pat kane jumped out of the gate as a top plyr, while logan couture took ~3-4 seasons to be at a similar level...development varies from plyr to plyr and schenn's just entering his 3rd season. and if you count games, it's more like his second.

Sharp isn't a top line player. He's grown nicely into a 2nd rounder but we all knew he was good. Schenn not so much.

I can't stand Schenn. I'm counting the seconds till he's traded.

- Flyersgod

Sharp is a mid-30's goal scorer, close to point per game... you must have high vexpectations for a top-line player.

And he was a 3rd-rounder that nobody really cried about when he was traded away. Who wouldn't take that trade back in a heartbeat?

Honestly, I'd be more worried about Couturier's offense than Schenn's potential.

In that case, no player can ever be directly responsible for a goal. Heck, he could take the puck, race towards his own net and roof a slap shot past his own goalie, and it's still not his fault because the goalie should have stopped it.

Okay, fine, not all his fault. However, when assigning fault, he was probably the most at fault. Or do all 6 players share equal responsibility?

Berube will bring a more defensive style, one that creates offense off its D, Homer says.#Flyers

More defensive style. THANK GOD.

I have 0 faith in this team as it is being a defensive minded team.

I guess we do. In my book, Elite is Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Ovechkin. B Schenn was never labeled as such.

Yep. As I said, he was "expected" to be elite (as I'd say the "best player not in the NHL" should be). Not saying he's a bust since he isn't, just that he was expected to be, eventually.

Man, the only reason I worry about Sean Couturier is they keep playing him with people who can't score and can't help him score.

his 1st stride has improved and he looks stronger, so there are indications that he can improve. he may end up being more of a martin handl type plyr though.

Sharp isn't a top line player? Maybe not on a stacked team like Chicago, but the dude would be a top line scorer on a boatload of other teams.
