what new coach comes in and openly clamors for a scoring winger?
- isaiah520

I know -- it was such a weak shot I should've just ignored it, but I'm human, you know?

I'm still...wow. So you keep Schenn/Couturier, no matter what, then?
- AllInForFlyers

Not by any means.

I see whats out there and if a deal makes sense, I make it.

Just not for some moron like Jack Johnson.

The one thing I will agree with Ed, is that nobody should be safe. The way things shook out its another evaluation year.

Fail for McDavid in 2015....Next crosby...
- PhillaBully

It's never a guarantee. What I will say, is that I would be all for Hextall taking over and building the team like LA did. They were bad for quite a while but drafted well (doughty) and accumulated depth at G. Once they felt they were turning the corner to compete.. get the right complementary vets.. (although Richie and Carts were young vets) and take your shot. It is NEVER a bad thing to have too much goaltending depth and that's why I was against the Bob trade (even though I didn't think he'd win the Vezina a year after he's traded). Having said all of this, you have to be able to correctly evaluate the talent. I am hoping this is where Hextall comes in as well. It seems we've undervalued guys we have had and ditched as well as overvalued guys we have gotten back of recent times (although some of that still is still up in the air).

I'm pumped for Stolarz. Thought he had a great preseason and he's off to a great start again this year in juniors, albeit on a really talented team. Either way, seems like he has a lot of upside

Well, all right, then! You're ready for some pain and suffering, and I respect that -- I do believe this team needs an infusion of elite talent, and yeah, one way to get that is by acquiring more picks, finishing poorly.

Yeah, best Flyer for the first three games is pretty impressive -- definitely worth every penny and the future headache.

Frankly, I agree it may be finishing poorly.

I hate to say that, but yeah. Its also a chance to build a proper identity, and a consistent work ethic that has been lost.

I think that's an overreaction.. that would be an absolute fire sale and we'd probably be looking at an Edmonton or Pittsburgh type 7 years out of playoffs rebuild. Maybe it works (see Pitt) maybe it doesn't (see Edm).
- Hextall271

I dont think it would be that bad. i think this years crop of FA's is pretty decent and with the money you save from trading players, can be used in FA.

It wouldn't be that drastic...
Grossmann
Coburn
Meszaros "gone anyway"
Timonen "likely to retire"
Streit (if you can)
Hartnell
Talbot
Hall
Emery

You would still be keeping:
Giroux
Voracek
Schenn
Lecavalier
Read
Simmonds
Couturier
Gustefsson
L.Schenn
Mason

And you would see what the Youth has to offer.

Ok great we have a number two center and were 0-3 looking at no playoffs for a second season...
Yea he really puts us over the top boy I tell ya...

There are very few individual players who could pull this team out of this situation single handidly.

So what do you think we'd be able to get back for these spare parts? Picks? Young highly touted prospects? I think the return would be minimal. Some walk for nothing UFA, but then we have to replace them and with players that are NHL ready.

patience is key

especially for a guy like Couts. Look at Lars Eller this year... 24 years old with some years under his belt and he seems to have taken that next step.

Have to admit, I think Tye McGinn deserves a shot right now...curious to see what Alderson, Cousins, Alt, Lauridsen might do, though the learning curve would be there...

Huh. There are some pieces to work with...maybe Petr Straka could give Sean Couturier someone to play with!

I still think it's too drastic. We'd replace 5 defenseman? You can't just bring in Morin, Ghost, Hagg etc because you don't want to kill their growth by rushing them a la Leafs/ Schenn.

I think you can get significant assetts for Coburn and Timonen from a playoff bound team. Same with Emery. For Gross maybe mid round draft picks and Mez late round picks.

Hartnell could defiantely get you a first minimum from a playoff bound team. Talbot will likely get you a 2nd and something else. Just pile the picks up.

The time was at the end of last season to bring in someone with a little more of a resume instead of bringing in Brube and Lappy, two guys whom I loved as players, but who have little or no coaching pedigree.

Now it's cross your fingers and wait and see if they can do the job.

Alderson had 2 points in his first game. McGinn also scored. If McGinn showed he is responsible in his own end of the ice, I think he would be great with Couturier.

I hear you, because there's a lot of risk in tearing this down -- I said it recently, but I saw Vancouver score three goals in 90 seconds against Edmonton. Edmonton's in Year 286 of their Unending Rebuild.

But I can't argue that this team, as currently constructed...I've been clear that I don't think it's all Laviolette's fault, and I do think they need more talent.

I don't know. Damn it. I can't believe we're talking about this and the season isn't even one freaking week old.
