No, it doesn't. But they Flyers have been outworked by a massive margin for most of three games they've played...or counting the pre-season most of the ten games they've played overall.
The team had tuned out the coach. For a variety of reasons they shut him out. Now they have a new voice that seems to feel they need to stress defense and solid 200 foot play, rather than attack style hockey.
I'm more excited about the latter part than the former. - Jsaquella
I truly hope that I can come on this board and say, 60 days from now after "The New Coach Glow" has worn off, that you guys were right and that this team wasn't competing hard enough.
I think they were competing. That's scary to say, and I wish I didn't feel that way. I wish that I thought that the reason I thought they looked awful is because they aren't trying hard enough.
But I don't feel that way. And I hope that I'm wrong.

I'm with you there. I don't want this team to be a strict defensive team, and pack it in, ala Tortorella, nor do I want them to be a trapping team. But in my mind the best Coaches today stress that it all starts with defensive play, and checking all over the ice. That is how the best teams play. And I also want to stress that an all out aggressive attacking style as Laviolette wanted, or a strict defensive style that can stifle offensive creativity, are not the only choices. There is middle ground, and that's what I want them to find. But above all, you have to take care of and support the puck. Defend in your own end well, and pressure the puck in all 3 zones to win in today's game. |

It was painfully obvious that this team overall wasn't matching the compete level of the opponents. From the Pre Season through the first 3 games.

Painfully obvious, was it? "Painfully obvious," was it? Huh. OK. Because it was "painfully obvious" to me that this team couldn't score in the preseason, but you were telling me then that they were going to score and that it was going to be fine once the season started. Right? That was you, right? Among others?
But now it's "painfully obvious" to you what was wrong? Yeah. OK.
We'll see, 60 days from now. We'll see who's on this roster then. What kinds of players.

I don't think they were working hard at all, poor effort, and badly outplayed, especially last night.
That said, I don't think Berube is a magical switch flipper, but I'm hoping we see a better fit in what he wants to do & the abilities of the roster

You know... The stanley cup final run aside.
What the hell has happened to the Flyers since the initial "new nhl" lockout.

The lack of ability to really change in mindset from above is at least part of the problem. |

They can't score because of the same compete level issues and the same reasons that Berube spoke of today. And for the same reasons why I stated a week ago, when you said that defense or anything else doesn't matter.
If you want to criticize me for being optimistic about the team before the Season even started, knock yourself out. And I'll tell you right now. If this team competes better, and takes care of the defensive end, they will score. Unless you think adding one player will solve having trouble scoring.
Claude Giroux is not scoring right now in the current teams situation. Adding a Winger to the same situation, isn't going to fix anything. Unless it's adding a star such as Stamkos, Crosby etc. that can make that big of an impact. But certainly not a Radim Vrbata type.

Trust me, now everybody's got amnesia about the Jason Akeson jokes and Scott Laughton's Only Played Five Games in the NHL But He'll Be Fine jokes, because it's just preseason and they're going to score.
Funny. I didn't hear anybody talking about "work ethic" and "compete level" last week, when they weren't scoring.

trading 2 center pieces in Carter & Richards
building with young centers Schenn & Couturier
handing "Vinny" a 5 year contract
what is the plan?

People have been skeptical for over a year now. I believe it's a combination of coaching, player commitment and the roster mix. Laviolette was a glaring problem because he had no answers. Now we find out how big the problem is with Berube. Ales one and Laughton are not the answer right now. |

The cap happened. You make a mistake and you're stuck no matter how many tickets you sell, no matter how many jerseys you sell, no matter the overflow expensive parking and over priced food.
All that buys you is Mike Robeiro in Phoenix, Nathan Horton in Columbus and Valtteri Filppula in Tampa Bay. |

It started before that... since salaries have escalated in the 90's, the team has gotten further and further away from any semblance of continuity. They're so preoccupied with buying/chasing after the "best" players, and trying so hard to win the last Stanley Cup, that building a real team with any kind of persistent chemistry falls by the wayside. |

Datsyuk, Alfredsson, BrindAmour, Jagr, Iginla, Elias, Doan...
But of course you are going by the career of a tiny, finesse forward who suffered multiple concussions. |

Most people were willing to play at least a few regular Season games and see what happens. Now that we have seen a few games, coupled with the pre season, and more importantly, how they played. Something needed to be done. And that something is not bring in another Winger. That's not going to fix it, if the rest of the team remains playing and competing to the low level that they have thus far into the Season.

Yeah. Thanks, MJL. Your team assessments are like gold with me. I can't believe I'd question your wisdom after you said this team has plenty of scoring talent, after they've scored a whopping one even-strength goal in three games.

I guess were going to have to have this conversation again. This is at least the 3rd Season that the Flyers have built the team around the young nucleus of Giroux, Schenn, Couturier, Voracek, Simmonds, and Read. As well as veterans such as Hartnell and Talbot.

Lack of scoring talent is not why they aren't scoring. That thought today was echoed by the new Coach, and what his feelings are, as to why they're not scoring.

I forgot Hitchcock was here further back than I thought, but a defensive minded coach eventually to Lavy is a complete opposite in philosophy, system, & culture
they really don't seem to have one plan, unless it works immediately, then it's switch things up again.
Equally shocking is that they wasted no time in handing Berube a multi year deal already before he's coached one game? |
