i know he's supposed to be tough and hold guys accountable.. but have you heard if he's a players coach type of guy?

wonder if it'll be sort of a bowa--manuel effect.. at least initially

- Crimsoninja

I think he'll get a lot of the guys' respect at first and won't have to be the bad cop. But I also suspect he'll be more willing to bench anyone who doesn't buy in...in fact it seems that's part of his marching orders.

Signing the best available goaltender and a former vezina finalist isn't a gamble. it's trying to make the team better. If you think it is then pretty much every player move is. Neither was trading for Pronger. As he instantly raised the Flyers to a legitimate Cup contender. Streit isn't a gamble either. There was a need for a puck moving defenseman.
I love when the Upshall card is played. As if losing Upshall was a big deal, and that resembles a gamble. And I disagree that there isn't a cogent organizational plan. You may not like or agree with the plan, but there definitely is one. And that plan is to try and win. And to use all the assets available to them, including Cap space to try and win.
And Holmgren has shown patience with the current young core of the roster. To not recognize that is to ignore the facts. And I don't need to defend Holmgren. I don't think Holmgren is in danger of losing his job. Even if they miss the playoffs this Season. Although I don't think that's an unreasonable thought, and I certainly could be wrong about that.

Giving a 9 year deal to a goalie who just got shelled in the playoffs was a huge gamble. The safer, smarter move was signing Vokoun to back up Bob.

I don't expect an immediate turnaround, but I sure as hell expect a better team effort. I'll be OK with a start like that.

Did anyone listen to the buzz cast today? On it our own Bill Meltzer and ek talk about a couple players that berube is not happy with and wouldn't be surprised if those players are traded!

Does anyone have a clue who they are talkin about?

Everyone will get an evaluation period and a clean slate to start. But all coaches have preferred players and ones of whom they're not especially enamored for various reasons. There is no need to say more than that, as I think players' ice time (and, if things don't turn around, potential roster moves) in weeks to come will be telling.

He's in much better shape this season. It's a poorly kept secret that he let his conditioning go during the lockout last year. He gets a fresh start but he needs to produce at a better rate than he did last season.

So @darrendreger just told us on TSN Radio that a Philly source openly wondered whether Luke Schenn can even play anymore.
whats this mean?

Hmm, Meltzer doesn't sound anything like I would have thought...nerdy with asthma, mousy and hesitant with lots of ummms and ahhhs, and a little shy, not prone to talking for a full 7 minutes + without any other interaction.

I kid, Bill, the world's best hockey blogger...

Bill, do you think Gill or Gus cracks the lineup or will it
stay the same for a bit?

I think Gus may get in within the next few games. I am attending the morning skate to see what changes (if any) will be made for the FLA game.

Rumors that the Leafs have been shopping/listening to offers for Jake Gardiner.

Supposedly they want a young center. Would anyone consider a deal built around Couturier or Schenn for Gardiner?

I'd rather package one of them with a 1st for a better player to be honest.

Is it safe to say that no Flyers coach will get fired after 2 games?

I read an article which said that the Flyers now hold the record for the quickest firing of a head coach at the start of a season.

At least now their #1 at something besides money spent on average defensive players. I wonder if they are #1 at handing out no trade/movement clauses as well?

Is this Bruce Arthur tapping into some insular Toronto humor at Luke Schenn's expense?

Bill, a lot of people are always saying trade schenn and couts. I understand that everyone wants that young good d man. The thing is I feel like the flyers always trade a player before his prime. Most players play their best around 25-30. Schenn is 22 (I think) and couts is 20. I know everyone wants to see results right now, but I feel like if we trade them before they hit their prime it would be a mistake.
Any thoughts?
