I am honestly glad they sent laughton down. He would not be able to play a lot of minutes here. He is dominating the OHL with 9 points in three games. He is the top center there and he needs to dominate a little bit so he can work on his offensive game. The more time prospects spend in the minors/ juniors only helps them (sometimes). Some prospects are nhl ready but little more seasoning will go a long way, just look at Detroit they have a plenty full of prospects that are trying to crack the line up but cant because the line up is already set. They don't trade their prospects if they cant crack the line up they let them play in the minors and when they need them they bring them up. If your minor league team is successful then your nhl team will soon be succefull because they learn how to win and transfer it to the big leagues when they come up. Key example: Richards, Carter

My mistake. Thanks. For some reason, I thought he wasn't playing.

That said, he's not playing particularly well.

Luke Shenn played 70 games in his Rookie Season. He missed 12 games due to a hip injury. The other remaining Seasons as a Leaf he played 79, 82, and 79 games.

Gardiner played 12 out of 48 games as a Leaf last Season. He missed 2 games with a concussion. And he was also sent to the AHL last Season after the lockout. And he can't get into the lineup so far this Season.

I don't think it's the same thing.

Actually, he's played every game for the Leafs so far, averaging more ice time there than Grossmann and Schenn are with the Flyers, as well as being a regular on the 2nd PP unit.

EDIT: Morgan Reilly is the kid not playing for the Leafs

Yep, I was mistaken about not playing this year. I still wouldn't trade either B Schenn or Couturier for him.

If they trade Gardiner it's because they feel Reilly is ready.

The Red Wings fired Bill Gadsby after 2 games in 1969-70...Ironically, Gadsby was 2-0 when the move came.

Sorry Steve, but I disagree with a bunch of stuff. Do I like seeing Laughton at the top? Yea, sure... but I also realize (and expected this to happen in a way) that he is playing against lesser competition. He is basically an NHL ready prospect playing in a league with boys (some as young as 15). I fully expect him to be that good. Detroit hasnt produced good NHL talent like you say in some time. They got very lucky with Datsyuk and Zetterberg, and thank god for them, because they really didnt have much of anything else from drafts.

Richards and Carter didnt season in the AHL.. they played 14 (Richards) and 31 (Carter over two seasons) PLAYOFF games at the AHL level.

If I remember, didn't Carter lead the AHL playoffs in scoring (by a wide margin) in 2005?

Not sold on Morgan Reilly. I know it's not a great measuring stick, but he was atrocious in the games he played at the 2013 WJC. I think he eventually got bumped off.
I think Jake Gardiner would be good here. That said, I still wouldn't trade Coots for him. There isn't a single equal value trade I'd trade him for. The only way I'd move him would be part of a package for a proven top-pair defenseman (i.e. Coots+ for Seabrook).

Listening to the toronto radio station and they were speculating that if riley makes the team then gardiner might be expandable. It appears to me the they Riley more than gardiner.

They might. And I know I just said the WJC is not a great measuring stick but, man do I love those 2010 USA WJC guys.

Not to mention that Gardiner can't get in the lineup. And had issues getting in the lineup last year. Not trading either Couturier or B Schenn for him. No way.

I lean towards no myself, but it's an interesting question...perhaps if it was more than a 1 for 1 trade. Still not sure I see a good fit between the Leafs and Flyers, trade wise.

I believe so.. but the Flyers didnt season them in the AHL.. they joined the Phantoms at the end of their JR seasons and played in the playoffs. They also had no other choice, seeing as how the NHL season was lost due to lock out.

the devils fired a coach with less than 10 games to go into a winning season - either in 00 or in 03 (can't remember), and they won the cup. if memory serves. crazy.

Everyone will get an evaluation period and a clean slate to start. But all coaches have preferred players and ones of whom they're not especially enamored for various reasons. There is no need to say more than that, as I think players' ice time (and, if things don't turn around, potential roster moves) in weeks to come will be telling.

I think Gus may get in within the next few games. I am attending the morning skate to see what changes (if any) will be made for the FLA game.
