Definitely how you win games. Nothing wrong with playing an aggressive style, but in any system there needs to be smart decision making, it seems Lavy was pressing a reckless abandon over-aggressive attack. Which led to all the stupid. - GirouxForTheShow
There has to be discipline. The Flyers had playoff success against the Pens because the Flyers got them off their game and burned them when they got undisciplined.
It's how teams like the Devils and Rangers beat the Flyers. Be patient, keep it close or get an early lead, and wait for an overaggressive mistake and burn them. |

Unfortunately, I agree. Laviolette simply has to move more towards middle ground in the future.

In the end, you're right. Talk is cheap. But I like what he's apparently trying to do. Myself, and others, I'm quite sure, knows what needs to happen. But teaching it, and getting the players to buy in and actually do it. Is a whole other story.

But not discipline in the sense of not taking penalties (although thats a plus) but discipline on the entire scheme. Knowing when to be ultra aggressive and attack the o-zone; when to give up a little ground but attack the neutral zone and turn pucks over. Discipline is needed in every system, the ability to play efficiently within the system. Efficiently being the key word. |

No one up for American Horror Story? I shouldn't be shocked. I only know one other person who watches it. Last season was terrific but an extremely difficult watch. My wife made it through just the first episode and was done. - mayorofangrytown

Discipline in that, too, but mainly disciplined play, not getting too overaggressive and overplaying a situation to get yourself out of position to make a play. Being smart and not forcing dumb, low percentage passes. |

One of the biggest flaws in my opinion of Laviolette's forecheck scheme. Go no matter what. It should be read and react. If the player doesn't feel like he can get on the puck, regroup and attack the puck on their breakout along the wall, or high in the O zone, or in the neutral zone. Good teams pressure the puck all over the ice. Not just deep in the O zone on the forecheck. And adjust the forecheck to certain teams. If you feel that you have an advantage and want to jump on them. By all means come out and attack with a 3-2 press forecheck. But if teams move the puck really well, then use a 2-1-2 forecheck that is still aggressive. But also responsible defensively. And also be able to play a 1-2-2 (not a trap) when you have the lead late in games to protect leads and shut it down.

New blood on the ice is always exciting. Really so when it's behind the bench. I hope the message is listened to brought with them onto the ice. |
