Small world! I used to live there, 25-20 years ago.

That place has changed so much since then (but it began even before I was there). All the nice back-roads between the long gone orange groves amongst the "Florida Alps" (the Lake Wales Ridge, AKA the primeval sand dunes when the big dong first popped out of the ocean eons ago). Now it's all housing developments up and down US27 from the turnpike to I-4.

I do really miss my place there. Although the orange grove that was next to us then is now gone. No sweet smell of orange blossoms at night now for the new inhabitants. The smell was so strong in some years that it almost made you sick... but in a good way (if you know what I mean). And since we were on a high spot, on a clear night we could see the nightly fireworks at WDW.

But I mostly miss having some nice MC rides out there that I'll never be able to recreate. Because of the growth, all my favorite back-roads have been straightened and choked with intersections and lights.

Also would have told you to try Jack Benny's BBQ in neighboring Minneola. One of the best ever BBQ spots I've been to in the entire USA, IMO (especially if you like the mustard-based Texas-style sauce). And I've been to a lot of BBQ places all over the country.

But it closed because of the pandemic (although I believe the 2nd gen owner wanted to retire, so he was looking to sell before that). Sad since it was around and owned by the same family since 1952:

I haven't been there since the reopening so I can't vouch for whether it's still really the same as it's been back when I frequented the place. But supposedly they still use the same recipes for the marinades, rubs, and sauces, so I'm keen to try it whenever I'm back in the area. Interesting in that they also now have a liquor license, but it's smart for the competition (chains like Smoky Bones and Sonnys). And from the looks of it, they seem to be going good and getting excellent reviews.

it was too hot for coffee over the past few days. but we have a break here for the next 4 days or so where it's just in the 60s and 70s so i will definitely try to remember to try it.
