Knowing what I know now, yes. Back then I would've said no. In fact I remember some other posters suggesting trading Couturier for Subban. I said I wouldn't. I was wrong about that. If, and with if being the key word, that deal was available, I would've been mistaken for turning it down. - MJL
Ok now if Montreal called today. Knowing what you know if Montreal wanted to trade subban for coots, read, and a 1st Would you make that trade? Yes or no |

There's no way MTL would have taken that trade. Different times? Sure. But PK sure as hell wasn't unproven or anything that would lessen his trade value.
If MTL wasn't stupid they'd be asking the same exact price for PK right now than they would have been X months ago. Just because a player is unsigned doesn't mean a team just waves the white flag. Besides, I'm sure, internally, MTL wasn't worried about getting PK signed.

You're right Montreal woUldnt now. But 10 months ago I bet they'd jump all over that. You'd have said 10 months ago we are overpaying but today you would do it in a heartbeat. Montreal was on the verge of trading subban aNd could have been had. We might have overpaid at the time (in our minds) but in actuality it would have been a steal. You say my trade proposals are in realistic? I said 10 monthago trade coOts for subban overpay if need be. Looking back you just agreed you'd do same thing. So stop saying this isn't 14 playstation trades. Someone just posted about brodin. So ok if homer identifies him as the answer to #1 dman problem then go get him. Overpay ( in out minds) if need be. Hopefully in s year we look we look back and say it's not overpayment just like you'd be saying today if homer weNt out and got subban as I suggested. Again any player can be had. |

Ummm didn't we almost trade g to Florida? Sorry no way Montreal wouldn't have accepted coots read and a 1st 10 months ago. Timing matters plenty. If you win a Norris trophy the price goes way up in trade talks. |

The time to get him is now. I like him alot too. Gretzky was traded. Anyone can be had. Once you me homer or anyone else identifies a player to gO after that is a major piece the price only goes up for that player as they get better. We actually overpay less now than in the future. Once Ed and the boys realize these pieces that are truly needed the sooner They should go get them. Hard? Yes but not impossible. Overpaying will happen. But in future hopefully we look back and say it wasn't much of overpayment. |

He's coming off a great rookie season, so the Flyers would be buying high right now.
Had the Flyers been willing to move Couturier in the summer of 2011, they would have gotten more for him than now, coming off that great playoff. Now that he's had a bit of a sophomore slump, the trade value takes a ding.
But the way Borodin played last season, Minnesota would be selling really high. |

There is one thing I will agree with you on, and it sort of seems to be a point you are bringing up.
I want the next few trades the Flyers DO make, to ensure that they get the "best" player in the deal coming back to Philly. Not trading for depth, or a collective group of players that has value.
I do agree with, and I think I have seen it mentioned here a few times that it may be time to sacrifice some of the overall depth, for elite talent.
Just stay away from guys like Vanek please. |

Speaking of trades, I do see Holmgren finally pulling a trigger on a package centering around Yandle/Coots.
If things dont change that as. Flyers will probably have to give up more than just Couturier though.

That why I say homer and Ed should realize after watching this team last year or so that dman is needed. Get the scouts together and go get a guy. Buy high buy low I don't care anymore. As long as we get him. No one wanted to trade coots and schenn for weber but what has it gotten us? Were going to rebuild anyways. Now if this team was so bad as to pick in the top 5 I'd say go that route buT even as bad as they are playing I still think they come close to playoffs they are just stagnet now |

I'd be okay buying high because even as it stands Hagg/Morin do not really project to be those puck moving kind of guys that are crucial to today's game. I think its unfair to put those expectations on them as it is.
I'd be okay spending, but as long as the d-man coming back is relatively young. Not really a huge fan of Bogosian, but Winnipeg, imho at this time would be willing to deal. |

Nobody wanted to trade Couturier, Schenn and multiple 1st rounders for Weber. If it had just been the two players, I think people would have been OK with it.
It's hard to judge right now just how good or bad they are. The former coach had clearly lost the team and they had no direction. They get a new coach, and 36 hours after he's hired they play their 3rd game in 4 nights. It's hard to get a real read on it right now, when we're not even 100% sure what system they will be playing.
That said, yes, they could use more mobility and puck skills on the back end. But making a trade, right now, in the next few days, is dealing from a position of absolute weakness. If they're really going to rebuild, wait until the TDL, and trade veterans for youth at that point.

If they can continue to add to the last 2 drafts, develop them, they'll be fine but patience is needed to go down that road. (knowing this is a road they'll struggle to stick with long term)
Making more trades will take that away & give them maybe a short term fix with just more holes to fill and little to no way of take care of those needs.

At least some one gets it. Elite talent is what this team and fan base needs. Look at what we gave up for lindros. Now debatable whether we won that trade but the principle is the same. I get roasted alot but I know if we had traded coots,read,1rst for subban 10 months ago we'd be laughing today |

See my thing is patience, but calculated patience.
I do not want to be dealing the youth on the farm, or Voracek, Read, Giroux, Coots and the Schenn's.
Other than that, its open season as far as I am concerned. If a deal makes sense I'd make one now. Although I really do have to admit, I can see that they will be dealing from weakness, especially this early in a season. It would be good to wait until the deadline if need be.
That D core though? I'd deal the majority of it now, and let the AHL youth have its shot like late last season. The current group wont be around when this team is contending for a cup regardless. |

I'm not saying either I wouldn't make a move, I'm just not willing to gut the team/system to make it happen.

Weber is elite. Best player in that deal. Ransom for sure but I guarantee for 30 minutes a night players wouldn't be parked in front of the net tsking advantage of us with weber in our lineup No matter what coach or system we decided to play |

For sure.
The stock of many of these guys is probably at an all time low anyway currently.
If its a rough year, they could be sellers at the deadline, which ironally the last time they were really that, was right before the summer of when Holmgren re-vamped the team with Briere, etc.
History, I have a feeling, will repeat itself but Hextall instead. |

It's what I'd do going forward, they have to do it. Teams are now getting the good stud players they have signed faster and to long term deals so more often that not free agency has little to offer & if you want to make a move it will cost you a crazy amount that will just set you back years. |

Definately.
It should however be open season on majority of the veterans of this team around the deadline imo. |
