Can you actually be offended if you're not part of the group being "slurred" against, for lack of a better word?
I don't have an opinion on Redskins, but I do get some American Indians being offended by it. - Jsaquella

Most American Indians call themselves that, Native American is coined by the State Department for census purposes. |

None, you have to have the stones to set the precedent.
I'm only saying I'm open to it. Not saying that they have to run right out and do it, nor am I saying he's the missing link. And yes, there are concerns about him, for sure. - Jsaquella
I mean, if Winnipeg is giving him away, hell, welcome aboard, Big Man!
But if we're talking about this guy being the panacea for all that ails this franchise, I would counter that it's a short term, desperation move. |

It doesnt matter what they call themselves. You should know that's thier term, and we can't use it. So please use Native Americans in the future. |

Timonen has made a number of statements. I think it's clear that he's not sure. I think how this year goes, and how he feels is going to play into it. |

I'm not condoning a move right now. I would rather see how the team plays first. Make a decision be December. Beat the deadline rush, and overpayments if its deemed this team is improved, but still needs something.. |

Actually, it would be a move addressing a need, because the Flyers blueline is currently lacking in talented puck movers who can provide offense. |

In other news, I'd like the New York Yankess to change their name because, as a member of a family who lived in the South during the American Civil War, I find that name to be offensive as a constant reminder of the North's perceived superiority over the South of the United States. - jmatchett383

If I didnt notice the decline starting last year, of always taking penalities when he is beat, which is happening a lot, then I might agree with you. He is not a top pair defenseman anymore. - youarewrong
He's certainly not the player he used to be. He's been in steady decline for a number of years. But he's still a pretty good player. |

I'm just not willing to give up assets for 2 years of what MIGHT be elite production.
What's the career precedent for 300 lb mobile NHL defensemen? - johndewar
He's around 265ish...again, reports indicate he's come into this season trimmed down and in shape (relatively). There's nothing to indicate he suddenly wouldn't be able to produce at the level he's been doing for the past few years...even at weight significantly higher than current...that said, I am also concerned about the assets it would take...but we'd have to hear a deal's terms to properly "weigh" it (no pun intended). |

Actually, bigger concern than the lost step is, I've noticed a few times where he's been indecisive about a play, maybe because he's unsure of his recovery speed. One of the breakaways, can't recall if it was Carolina or Florida, Timonen started to go for a puck, then stopped, and it ended up a breakaway against. - Jsaquella
Yea, that little hesitiation will kill you. I really think that is part of the adjustments he has to make. Not try and make some plays that he was able to make in the past. And anticipate a little more, and give himself a step in the other direction. He's going to have to play a little bit safer. |

But, at age 28, it doesn't necessarily need to be temporary. We're automatically assuming he won't agree to a conditioning program?
Because if we're there, then we can automatically assume that Mason will revert to his Columbus form, where he didn't listen to coaches or work hard on his game-because those were the big knocks on Mason.
I'm just saying that his issues are an acceptable risk to me, depending on the price. |

Sure I can. It's a part of heritage for many people in the South who still resent the "Yankees." A large part of my family on my mother's side still lives in Georgia.
So what about other teams? If a person had a parent that was stabbed and has nightmares about it, can they ask the Sabres to change their name? If a person lost their house and/or loved ones in a Hurricane, can they ask the Canes to change their name? The Devils are symbolizing a creature who's an affront to God, which could be offensive to Christians.
Can Irish people ask the Celtics to change their logo if they don't like their representation of an irish person?
I may be insensitive, but the Native Americans need to stop whining and deal with it. No one's doing it to be malicious, and they haven't brought it up for decades. It's another case of a small group of people wanting to change something that doesn't really make a difference in the end. |

Nothing. He plays two years here and if he doesn't work on his conditioning, flip him at the TDL or delve into the FA market.
The Flyers defense has plenty of guys that will skate through a wall, they need more skill. Byfuglien has skill. I'm not going to write him off completely because of size.
He wouldn't be my first choice, but I wouldn't say NFW, either. - Jsaquella
Byfuglien's skill level or offensive production isn't the issue. It's his all around lack of discipline. He doesn't play a smart game. He gambles on the offensive side too much. He lacks the little things in his game that contribute greatly to winning. I don't think he's the kind of defensman this team needs to add. |

Very possible...but I'm interested because he's a defenseman averaging more PPG over the past few years than Jeff Carter.
(0.715 for Byfuglien vs 0.676 for Carter since he left the Flyers) |
