The argument those groups are making is that "Redskin" is a derogatory, racist term. They're not making the claim that people called Redskins did anything malicious to them.
I just understand why they may have an issue with it...and yes, it's probably being oversensitive. - Jsaquella
I'm sorry, but if one party chooses to caricature/steal symbolism from another party, and it draws offense, it should be the responsibility of the former to make right.
There's respectful portrayal of American Indian/First Nations symbolism in sports branding (Canucks come to mind)... then there's Redskins, Chief Wahoo, tomahawk chops, and that kind of nonsense. |

Byf's character concerns and fitness level would scare me away from overpaying but if we're being honest, Byf at 28 years old is BETTER than any defenseman currently on the Flyers roster and that includes a 38 year old timonen. - Flyers_01
Not as an all around defenseman he's not. Not even close. He'd be the best and most dynamic offensive defenseman on the team. |

And why wasn't this brought up in the 8 preceeding decades?
Also, if you say that logos/names can be changed if it offends a group, you'll have thousands of crap lawsuits thrown at everything from names to logos to merchandise sales to arena names, etc. |

No way.
It's got nothing to do with the fact Timonen is currently playing with the Flyers even if he's clearly washed up.
Mind you, I used to like Timonen style of play, but quite frankly, he's pretty much done at this point. - Pecafan Fan

I understand where you are coming from. They have been the Redskins since 1935, all of a sudden it's an issue now? That's the part I don't understand. - PLindbergh31
well, I'm Jewish and if they ever try to name a hamilton franchise the hebes, I'm going for reparations...

I don't think the need is for a puck moving offensive defenseman. The need is for a quality two way defenseman that can play in all situations, to replace Timonen. Byfuglien is not that player. - MJL
Except that Byfuglien plays in all situations. The Jets are now using him on the PK, as well as the PP. He's also a 24 minute a night horse for them. |

I disagree that Luke Schenn has reached his apex as a player. tons of room for growth there. - MJL
besides decision making, i don't see much more. #4-5 guy, can be very solid, if unspectacular. |

Moving a guy to defense is a very difficult transition. It takes a lot of learning and hard work to get better at the defensive aspects. I just don't think he's willing to work hard enough to do that. That would be my concern with him.
I would take him on, but I wouldn't be willing to give up anything significant for him. It's too risky. |

was he done last season when he got more points than weber on a crappy losing team? - -davies-
The Nashville Predators are an offensive juggernaut.
Also, points are the be-all end-all of defenseman stats. |

Off the top of my head, there were demonstrations in 1992 during their Super Bowl year. They petitioned the owner to change the name, but to no avail. |

I think your thinking of when they were considering moving JVR for Vokoun. Florida may have been asking for Giroux, but weren't getting either. - youarewrong

If Schenn amounts to nothing more than a # 4-5 guy, Burke's last move as Toronto GM would have been eating Holmgren's lunch. |

It's a valid argument. There are, however, several American Indian groups that have no issue with the name and have even come out against a name change.
Using my point about some Italians offended by mobster caricatures while others couldn't care less is where my view lies. If the hatred of the word was universal amongst the afflicted parties, obviously it'd be a different story altogether. |

I think his point is that if everyone starts caving to people because they are being oversensitive then Shyt will get out of hand. I think a, we understand your concerns, but we feel the term Redskin while it may have been derogitory in years past, is nothing more then a symbolic name now. |

I'd be more interested in that angle myself, for sure. But Byfuglien was the topic. I'm not married to adding him, but I'm open to it. |

I love how something is a rumor because one team asks for him.
Do you know how many teams ask about other players. It happens every day. |

I wasn't aware of that.
That said, I'll use my best Republican voice and tell me "Guys, deal with it." If a team wanted to call themselves the Atlanta Stupid White Folk, I really wouldn't have a problem with it, because it doesn't affect me at all. |
