One theory is that they didn't play enough in the pre-season. They kept 50-60 guys around for a long time, perhaps that glut caused drills to be hard to run and kept them from doing more 5 on 5 "scrimmage" time practices and game situations.
Berube talked about it in ASF's column, saying they didn't get enough good skating in during camp, not that they were out of shape.

I know we are onto a new blog but just want to say I agree here about them misusing the preseason.
The team brought in 3 big FA signings and you could even say Mason was a fourth given how he joined late last year. It seems to me they would want to maximize the preseason and get guys used to each other. I hated those split squad games. Is it a team's choice how they schedule the preseason games? Obviously they and the coach had a lot on the line, and didn't use the time well.
Also I am befuddled at Lavi's line combos to start the season.
It seemed to be another thing that worked against him. Berube recognized it and went back to the familiar lines right away. Not sure it would have ultimately made any difference in the outcome of the coach being fired but seemed like a mistake to me.
