They were allegedly asking for Schenn and Couts. I don't think you can make that trade. If it was just Schenn + 2nd rounder then I would have pulled the trigger.

Remember how we all talk about being patient and not wanting the Flyers to sacrifice major young talent to solve a current need?

- PhillySportsGuy

Yup I know it.
I think they could have gotten Yandle for one of the centers plus a first plus another piece. Which is still likely too much. I think the Flyers could have kept one of Schenn/Couts and gotten the deal done. Water under the bridge at this point.

I am glad they kept them but now am prepared to be patient and see them struggle until they fix the mix they on D.

I know. I'll never understand why they didn't make more of an effort to bring back Jagr. Jake and G piled up points together last year, but they didn't control play as well as Hart-G-Jagr.

G really needs a good veteran scorer to play with. I was hoping they went after Elias instead of Vinny.

I wouldn't mind seeing Vinny on the top line, but then we'd be moving Schenn all around again.

- PhillySportsGuy

In hindsight Jagr would have been a good signing because they could have traded him for picks at the deadline.

I don't think Elias was the answer this offeason, though. NJ is paying him $5.5 million to play until he turns 40. The Flyers would have had to offer at least $6 million to make him want to leave the only team he has ever played for to go to their bitter rivals.

We all clamored for years for the team to build a defense through the draft instead of trades and free agency. They've started down that path, so I'm willing to suffer through the next couple seasons.

This league has turned into a defenseman driven league. Finding guys who can defend the speed without clutching and grabbing is difficult now. It used to be finding big forwards who can play through the clutching and grabbing.

Teams with good defenseman depth and little forward skill are playoff caliber while teams with forward depth but not much defenseman skill are lottery teams.

On G, he is typically a slow starter.
Injuring his tendons is not helping and despite what he says about being 100% I think this injury has an effect on his play.
I also believe not starting him with Jake right off the bat was/is a
mistake.

But as a player and leader for this team I have no doubts.
He is ultra competitive and an elite skill guy.
He will be a great captain for them for years.

I know. It probably would have taken more than 6M to be honest. I have always wanted a veteran scorer with Giroux. A guy he can rely on to be in certain areas. Someone who sees the ice like he does.

6 mill for Elias is too much IMO.. I don't think we could have fit him under the cap.. I'd rather have Vinny at the cap hit he has as well.

Agree 100%.
Also I am praying that one of the current prospects they have on D works out at some point but also am skeptical on this.

I see Boston with Krug and Hamilton and watch the rich seemingly get richer.

I wonder about the Leafs and if there is a trade to made there. They seem to currently have an excess of puck possession defenseman right now.

I envision a GIF of Giroux running around the ice chopping heads off and burying a goal

Between Gus, Ghost, Alt, Hagg, Morin and Lauridson, you have to think at least 3 of them will fit into the top 6. They already have Schenn as a top 4 guy.

I think the hope is that one of them develops into a top pairing guy.

I don't know. I have my worries about tonight. Phoenix is very similar to the Devils (strong defensive team that checks well and has a puck handling goalie). Except Phoenix has Yandle and OEL while the Devils have Bryce Salvador

Takes time to change the way the players think within a system.

Meh, it's a wash.

Phoenix has a better defense corps, but NJ is way better in net, and deeper up front.

I'd take either one of their coaches, though.

Sorry to go back in the past, but does anyone know if the Flyers would have drafted Kane had they had the first pick instead of the 2nd?

Be patient, I think Voracek is just getting back to game shape after hurting his back. At some point, probably soon, he will be back with Giroux and they will start to click. I'd rather have the 25 year old Giroux and the 24 year old Voracek playing together with either Hartnell or Simmonds than spend 6 million plus on Elias or a similar vet.

The lack of confidence is hurting them right now, plus apparently their conditioning.

They played really good against Toronto for two periods. So it's not like this team doesn't have talent, and can't be competitive on a nightly basis.

- KGBflyers10

They've completely lost their confidence and swagger as a team -- tough to play good systematic hockey when you have it in the back of your mind that you can't trust your teammates to be where they're supposed to be and playing the way they should be.

Hopefully Berube can piece it all back together, but it's going to be a tall task.

As for conditioning, I'm not sure that's the issue. Showing up to the rink ready to compete is probably the bigger problem with this group.

Hard to see how they wouldn't of, he was pretty much the consensus #1 guy on almost every list.

30/30 teams would have picked Kane.

Turris and JVR were a good step (or two) behind.

I think they would have. Kid plays for London; Spectacor has a relationship with the Knights. I'm sure they scouted him heavily.

I recall Turris being even further behind because he wasn't there concerns about the competition he was facing at the time? Or am I misremembering?

I wasn't really an avid follower of the draft back then. I would watch it, but I didn't do much research beforehand.
