nice blog as always bill
i know couts is listed at #2C, but i heard that he's still the #3C. If so, someopne PLEASE tell me why?
If he isn't playing 2nd line minutes tonight ill be really (frank)ing pissed off. the guy has been our 3rd best FW this year to Schenn and Vinny, and you're going to continue to play him on the 3rd (frank)ing line?
its like the moves of idiocy never change despite a new coach.
On the other hand, Mezzy is finally out for Gus. Its funny because Mezzy had his best game of the year last night, the other 4 were pretty mediocre, 1-2 bad ones. |

am I the only one to think trading a forward(s) is not trading from strength on this team for a dman? I mean, I can see trading grit (a hartnell or Simmonds type) for skill but I just don't see the flyers having enough depth to trade forwards otherwise - nastyflyergirl
I think they could make a hockey trade and trade a stay at home D man for an offensive D man.
Or or grit winger for a skill winger.
But I'm not sure they will get any value back, they would be selling "low" at this time. |

I understand what you're saying here, and it's true.
But one thing I fervently believe is that when you have a bad team, you'd better be careful at slapping the label of "core player" on every single player that moves, just because they're young...because you're a bad team. SOMEBODY can't play. Somebody is overrated. Somebody is not good enough.
Because you're a bad team. SOMEBODY needs to go, and better players need to come.
I don't want them to just dump players. But I'm not married to anybody on a roster that isn't winning. - AllInForFlyers
Not always the case. Sometimes a team has very good players but just isn't playing well. You see it all the time. A team is struggling, they make a Coaching change, some adjustments are made in how the team plays. Players are put in different positions, and the team responds.
Now just so there is no confusion, I don't think this current team compares to that LA team. For a number of reasons. But the point remains the same.
And there's a flip side, when a team isn't playing as a team, you better be real careful to write a player off, that you shouldn't, just based on a bad Season, or a bad stretch of games.
The Flyers can't lose sight of what has happened here. They were a dysfunctional team that was poorly coached last Season. That carried over to this Season. And it was obvious that the Coach and the players no longer were a fit.
The goal is the same. To abandon the course they have been on in building this team now, just sets them back even more.

There is a lot of time left in the season and they will turn this around. G and Jake need to get going. The team played better last night, not great but better. It's going to take for the Chief to put his mark on the team. The team has two solid goalies for the first time in a long time. Right now scoring is a big issue, but that will change. I see a huge break out game coming in the next week or so. |

I understand your point -- for example, I wouldn't move on Luke Schenn, and I wouldn't move Mark Streit, because he's been doing what he was brought here to do.
But that is what player evaluation is for -- sometimes, players slip and just aren't what they were. Or don't become what you want them to be.
Giving those players too much time is every bit as bad as giving players not enough team -- you mention L.A., which is a fair example. But I can easily counter that with Calgary, with Iginla/Bouwmeester/Kiprusoff as its core.

Team management has to approach this the same way as if it was winning right now. Even if they were 5-0 or 4-1 this year, and off to a great start. They would still realistically be a move or two away from being a legitimate contender. The mix of the defense needs to be tweaked. And they need their young players to continue to mature. That would be the case regardless of their record. Any moves made need to be for the future. It's okay to trade youth for youth in return to tweak the mix. But don't trade youth for older players just to try and save the current Season.

If this is true and Meszaros is sitting, this is exactly the kind of move that should be made. Gustafsson needs to play. |

Young players development is rarely linear. It is normally ups and downs. I don't think Calgary is a good counter to my point. None of the Flyers core players are anywhere near the age of the Calgary players you mention. Giroux, Simmonds, Voracek, Couturier, and B Schenn are all 25 or younger.

i think you make make a point for either mez or kimmo to sit... in all truth kimmo is looking slow and just being out played in alot of situations right now....don't get me wrong kimmo has been a warrior for us and played his heart out but this isn't the past and they are playing now not in the past....i personally hope it is just a slow start for kimmo.... |

He was, by far
So why keep him as the #3C and not play him with better players?
Also that minutes played stat is obviously inaccurate because Vinny didn't play the 3rd at all, so en extra probably 3-4 mins as usual for him |
