Scott Gomez never stopped playing hard. His mind would tell him what needs to happen. But his hands and speed left him, in the blink of an eye. He literally couldn't get to where he needed to be on the ice, and if he did, his hands wouldn't let him finish.

or may not. Briere was bought out rather than traded because of his NMC. It was in his best interest to force the Flyers to spend money to get rid of him. Briere's NMC allowed him to extract paydays from 2 different teams.

I think Mtl is paying him more over the next two years than his flyers contract would have paid over the same time.....I could be mistaken, though

That has to be the absolute hardest thing in this sport: Identifying when a once-productive player is going through a bad stretch or slump, or if they've actually lost it.

I get it: No one wants to give up on a player too soon, especially those who have gotten it done before. And sometimes, you can fake it when the skating erodes, especially if you have great hockey sense.

But for some players...some players just need to come out of the lineup.

I’ve been a Flyer for a long time. My heart belongs in Philadelphia with the Flyers. I can’t see myself playing anywhere else.” According to the report, the Bruins are among the teams interested in the 35-year-old. The St. Louis Blues seem to really be interested in Briere, too. St. Louis general manager Doug Armstrong has reportedly seen the Flyers in person a few times in the last couple of weeks. Yet it doesn’t sound like anything is going to happen until Briere changes his mind regarding his non-movement clause, which doesn’t sound likely at this point.

Frontloaded contracts are easy to move if the players can still play and the majority is paid.

EDIT : Briere is now not only making more money than if he had accepted a trade, he got to choose his team which he wouldn't have been able to with a trade.

The biggest reason why people, including me, at the time of the draft weren't too happy with the Morin pick because he projects to be fairly one dimensional as a shut-down d-man.

Now Morin, isn't by any means the sole concern, and is actually a bright spot currently. However it is kind of weird that they chose to pick a fairly one-dimensional guy, in an area where better all round talent is needed.

I think you're discounting the "boss" part of your scenario above.

For most people in most situations, if you boss tells you to do something and you don't do it, you're going to have a problem.

Sure, at McDonalds, you'll have a problem. This not most jobs. At an executive level, like Holmgren's, you are not expected to just follow orders. Snider's job is to make money and he's very good at it. Holmgrens job is to win the Cup and he has not been so good at it so far.

I really like McGinn from what I have seen and has held his old pretty well in the fight category didn't he bite off all he could chew with Newbury or so I had thought and he stuck around and didn't look out of place in that fight

Yes.... he had some ups and downs yesterday but got better as the game move along in addition to scoring a goal and posting an assist.

No one seriously knows HOW much input the "old man" has, but he wasn't quiet during the presser, he was pissed, imagine how pissed he is behind closed doors, & you think he has no or very little input?

Are you suggesting that Holgren is intimidated by Snider? If he lets the owner strong arm him into things he's an even worse GM than I think he is and I think he's pretty bad. I just don't see it, at this level. I don't see Holmgren as a guy who is easily intimidated or pushed around. If Holmgren didn't want to sign Bryz for all those years and all that money I don't think he would have...no matter what his boss said. I am assuming he would do his job and explain to the boss why this would be a bad move. If his boss didn't like it he could fire him. That's how I see it working. I also do not see Snider as a guy who hires an empty suit. He has stated many times that he lets his employees do their jobs. Especially at the highest levels.

hartnell is a dope but already
