Like I said, he was just as good here as he was in Anahaiem, especially in the 2 seasons preceeding him coming here. Same with Lappy, he did the same role here the same way he had in Colorado the 2 seaons prior. Talbot went from being a healthy scratch to a 19-goal scorer. Voracek has improved steadily since we acquired him (OH NO, 6 GAMES WITHOUT A GOAL!).
Do you expect Pronger to win another Hart, Lappy to become a 30-goal scorer, and Talbot to score 20 playoff goals? Those guys were brought on to play a specific role, and did exactly what they were expected to based on their track records leading up to their acquisition. - jmatchett383
Nice MJLing there.
And the answer is no, when an older guy comes, you expect some reasonable decline... which feeds back into what the OP was complaining about...
Of course guys like Briere, Vinny and Streit are never going to be as good as they were for their previous teams, while in their primes... and older players like Pronger, Jagr, Vinny and Lappy that come with injury histories are probably not going to be able to stave off health-related decline... so why keep going after these kinds of players if we already know from past experience that we're going to eventually be in the same situation over and over again... LTIR, buy-outs, bad trades, etc. |

Ha! Yeah. At that number, that makes it even more so, why the Flyers want the guy to be able to play.
If he was doing ANYTHING to help the team as a whole, he'd be in the lineup. - AllInForFlyers
holding out for trade purposes makes thew most sense. they are probably going to have to take under value for him due to injury worries. this team needs a major roster shake up and it can't come too soon |

Absolutely, those two should be trading partners. The fit for those two teams is incredible.
They just have to swallow hard and do a deal. - AllInForFlyers
Edmonton would undoubtedly be swallowing if they took that deal. |

I think there is a trade to be had with the Oilers based in the current situations for both teams. I am just not sure what exact pieces close it.

who is the best player not in the nhl? maybe we can get him since that always works out well too Nice MJLing there.

Ha! Not necessarily that deal, but some combination. They have too many smallish/skilled forwards, we have too many grinders.
If they wanted, there's some kind of deal out there for them -- Coburn would probably help them, as well, though I'm not certain how the Flyers would address his loss in the lineup -- yes, he has flaws, but the things he does well are not quite as easy to replace.

I'd probably be trying to unload Grossmann on them if I could. Not a slight to Grossmann, but (aside from tossing a defenseman on our own goalie) he's had a fairly positive start to the season. Still, when he's playing well Coburn brings more to the table, and I'm not averse to trading him either. I guess it depends on what's coming back. |

Works offensively. Doesn't work defensively. - MJL
That second line - Raffl, Schenn, Simmonds - is a defensive nightmare. Raffl might be ok, not sure yet, but Schenn and Simmonds are fairly weak in their own end. If anything, bumping Read up and Simmonds down might balance both O and D on those lines. |

See, that's another indicator of just how ineffective he's been.
If he was playing well enough to stay in the lineup, you'd play him. Veteran status, salary, last year of contract. Not old or anything.
But the biggest thing is you wouldn't even worry about him getting hurt, because if he does and it's serious enough, you just slap him on LTIR and get all that sweet, sweet cap relief.
Again, it's clear, totally clear
that his play left a lot to be desired. There are too many reasons to play the guy for him to be a healthy scratch. He just wasn't doing anything. |

Rotoworld :
Daniel Briere will start Tuesday's game in Winnipeg on the fourth line.
"I can't let it worry me. Things change fast," he said. "All four lines have been chipping in and I know that wherever I'm slotted, I have to respond." Briere has one assist in five games this season and his helper was picked up on Max Pacioretty's empty-net marker versus Edmonton.
---------------------------------------
It won't last but it's nice to see Briere on the fourth line after he forced the Flyers to buy him out. - Flyers_01
And how did he force them to buy him out? Being old and injured isn't really his fault.

I'm not dealing anything of high value (i.e. Couturier, to a lesser extent Simmonds) to EDM unless there's some kind of deal for Klefbom or Marincin possible.
If you want pure skill, Linus Omark has Ville Leino-esque upside and is probably not too happy w/ being cut again. I'm sure he wouldn't cost much. |

On the game tonight, hopefully the Flyers can pull off the minor miracle of staying out of the penalty box.
Canucks have similar high end talent as the Wings and giving them multiple PPs will surely not work out well.
Love the Yakapov trade proposals so far, lets get them to throw in Eberle too for our trash while we are at it. What a hoot.

That's fine -- it doesn't have to be a blockbuster. We were just having fun last night, you know?
But at its simplest, Edmonton and the Flyers really should do some kind of deal. Both of those teams are off to horrible starts, with what they don't do well exactly what the other team has in abundance.

Actually I think Buffalo, if they'll trade with us, presents a better fit. I'd trade just about anybody off this team for Tyler Myers. |

So far the constants this year have been the revolving door to the sin bin, and 2 goals or less. Lets see one of those change tonight. |
