No PK time is very telling. The staff is not happy with Luke Schenn right now. For whatever (multiple) reasons.
- MBFlyerfan

No, it isn't. Schenn was in the box for fighting during the Flyers only penalty kill of the night. Do some basic research before jumping to conclusions.

I'll give you that. Still, even 15:00 is low for a top-4 defenseman.
- jmatchett383

It is.

And I was watching in a bar and in the middle of a conversation when Schenn went with Zac Kassian. Was their any reason Schenn engaged Kassian? Or, was this a mutual "let's go" sort of thing?

we likely will be 1-7 after tomorrow nights game, I can't see this team clawing back to even be a .500 team by season end..

And any chance we can get someone to make an avatar or Gif of Berube doing the flip the switch from off to on like Flyskippy had with Lavy...

It would really take a lot of creativity to do that.

Do we have that "astute" of a GM? the hockey gods, (as Gene Hart used to say), are punishing them for the bad contracts.

struggling with all kids would be a ray of light, but Vinny & "can't shoot Streigt" Hartnell, the bad contracts could weight them down for a while.

- puckhead17

You know what? I don't think it'd be all that difficult -- some of that stuff, they're going to do anyway.

If Craig Berube survives this -- and that's not guaranteed, if Ed Snider cleans house and doesn't promote Ron Hextall -- he'll identify guys he likes, as would Hextall or the new GM.

But really, moving many of those pieces around wouldn't be difficult at all.

Simmonds, Voracek and Read are have contracts that are fine. They wouldn't be tough to move.

Hall, Timonen and Meszaros are unrestricted. You can bury Rinaldo and Rosehill in the minors.

Braydon Coburn and Niklas Grossmann aren't even 30 yet. Someone would definitely take Coburn; Grossmann's health concerns make him a tougher sell.

Talbot makes a bit much for a fourth-liner, and again, Hartnell and Lecavalier have full no-moves. Hartnell's contract is one where you'd have to retain salary.

But yeah. It really wouldn't be that difficult to change...10 guys, 12 if you wanted two new goaltenders, without really breaking a sweat.

Couturier and Schenn have value as still-young players. It just wouldn't be that difficult to radically change this team.

Last night, yes. But he currently ranks 4th on the Flyers in SH TOI/GP.

Coburn - 4:23
Timonen - 3:21
Grossmann - 3:18
Schenn - 2:16

So he plays just under half of the top PK player, and over a minute less than the #3 player. That's a big dropoff. I don't have the game-by-game stats, but I'd guess his PK time has dropped off in recent games, as I haven't noticed him out there as much on the PK.

You've NEVER seen that? It's Boston's MO, they did it the entire playoffs last year. The idea is to put 2 out there. The first one (who's not as good as the other) cheats. If he's tossed out, the other one takes the draw. It happens quite regularly.
- jmatchett383

of course i've seen it. i'm saying you could pull your goalie and put 6 centers out there and if/when 5 get tossed one would still need to win the freakin' draw. how many times would you want hall out there? so maybe he takes 5 or 6 draws for giroux; that still leaves him 15/44....is that good? or is the theory that giroux would magically win all 44 draws because hall took 5 for him? it makes no sense in terms of percentage.

The Flyers will be shorthanded plenty of times on Thursday so we'll have ample opportunity to put the theory to the test.

The amount of analysis performed on L. Schenn's icetime has been pretty impressive so far this season. I look forward to the latest batch of data tommorrow night that we can pick apart.

It will probably be more entertaining than the game itself.

moving certain "movable" pieces though is one thing, but getting value is another, that's the problem, any GM would know that this team creating a fire sale would be desperate to change players to create a different culture would not care to offer fair or equal value, & they would just wind up staying the same for the most part.
We do know that rebuilding isn't in the plans, never ever, so swapping bad contracts/veterans in hope of creating a culture change?

You know this team is bad when showing up and resembling an NHL team for 30-minutes is considered a moral victory.

Perhaps .25 points can be awarded in the standings for moral victories.

8 games in? Not at all, team's obviously destined for a bottom-t pick. At this point, why even bother putting the team on the ice? They're just gonna lose every game. We'll get Aaron Ekblad, and all of our problems will be solved.

An argument can be made for the games to move to Comedy Central.

Jon Stewart can replace Coates in between the glass.

Then they'd have to dock the Leafs .25 points for every one of their how-the-hell-did-they-manage-to-pull-that-one-off victories.

Could've had a top 5 draft pick from last year's draft on the roster today but the Flyers decided they didn't need one.

See, I don't see it that way -- if you put Simmonds up for auction, or Voracek, you're getting at least a first-round pick both. Voracek probably gets you a first and a good roster player. Because as awful as they look right now, after 82 games, they're going to produce numbers that other teams will want.

Read gets you a roster player. If Couturier does anything at all this season, he'll have plenty of takers, for a fair price, because he's still 6-4 and 205 pounds, and growing. Brayden Schenn's going to come in between 35-50 points, most likely, and if he does that at his age, someone will be glad to take him, too.

There's enough value in those five players alone that you'd net plenty of picks and different players and change the look of the team -- which is what Ed Snider would likely want to have happen.
