To me, it looked like somebody hacked his stick at the last second and changed the angle, then it went off Fleury's toe, then glanced off the post? - Tomahawk
Maybe you're right.
Point is, not every goal has to be picking corner from the side boards.
Finish around the net ("greasy goals") hasn't been great either. |

Totally agree. He's not the answer for what ails this team. At least not in his current incarnation. |

Hey guys, sorry if it's been posted, but Paul Stewart's blog has a video of the Bureau/Svoboda hit complete with the Mactavish fight. That was the only time I thought I saw someone die, and I hated Bureau when he was on the Flyers. I also forgot how MacT wouldn't stop, and actually ended up kneeing him. The NHL needs more guys like him. - jmatchett383
I was at that game. Everyone wanted Bureau dead. |

I'm struggling to make sense of it. I thought that with the additions and another year of seasoning of the young guys, that the team would be better. I wasn't prepared to say they'd make the playoffs in a tough division but I thought they were headed in the right direction. What happened? I'm beginning to think that the winning streak at the end of the year was fools gold. If that's the case, could it be that the players we got for Carter and Richards just aren't as good as we thought. Understand, that Carts and Richie were two accomplished players and would not be fully replaced until the young players developed. I'm just questioning the ceiling on Schenn, Coots and Voracek. I think Holmgren recognized that they need a scorer but he couldn't pull off a deal. Would having a Bobby Ryan on this squad be a significant enough upgrade to change the long term trajectory? |

I think some people need to be careful not to read too much into this current swoon as far as making conclusions about the abiltiies and potential of players, especially the younger ones. Everybody except Mason looks like crap right now...a lengthy losing streak will do that to a team. No one can convince me that the talented players here have all regressed and lost their skill and knowledge of how to produce at same time...it's easy from the outside looking in to point and say they aren't talented enough...but I don't buy it...there is real talent here and more in the pipeline. While I don't see the current team as a contender, I do see a team that can be significantly more competitive once they get themselves out of this funk and the younger players can continue to develop in a positive manner...not that they aren't leanring important lessons by going through this tough stretch, but a few good wins and the confidence will start to return...then we will be better able to assess what (longer term) needs the team may have more rationally, without looking through the skewed prism of the intense pressure currently on the players and the organization. |

Not the right mix of players. It really does come down to that.
You can have the best players in the world, but if they can't pkay well with each other you won't find lots of success. |

Nope. Every single player on the team has regressed to 3rd liner or worse. It's a fact. |

Problem is, I think somebody like Vanek will be forthcoming...
Transition game lacking? Get the most offensive defenseman available!
Problem in between the pipes? Get the Russian Vezina-finalist!
Need another Pronger? Draft the kid that kinda looks like him when you squint!
Can't score as a team? Get the former 40-goal scorer!

It's just a different take on the same set of circumstances -- it's equally valid as long as this team doesn't suddenly go on an offensive tear for the remainder of the season. Unless that happens, it'll continue to be a worthwhile point of debate in here. - Tomahawk
Where that take come from is what matters. All you have to do is look at the past, to see that the offensive players on this team have talent. Look at a talented goal scorer that goes into a prolonged slump during a Season. Does that player go into a slump because his talent left him? And then when he comes out of that slump, did he suddenly find his talent again? Of course not. Far more likely that he develops some bad habits and stops doing the things that he was successful with when he was scoring. Such as Giroux who has pretty much been a perimeter player, and isn't displaying the hunger for the puck and refusing to be stopped attitude that he's had in the past. Why is that? I think maybe a Sports psychologist is needed more for this team then a Coach. |

Who's the pure finisher on Crosby's line? Dupuis or Kunitz? (Hint: neither) Yet, Crosby's averaging 2pts/game.
Hertl/Thornton/Burns are two playmakers and a converted defenseman, although Hertl's been scoring goals like a finisher.
There's no pure finisher on the Zetterberg/Datsyuk/Bertuzzi line either.
There's no formula to a good line, and most players inhabit traits of various player types, so it's not a matter of just going out and getting a "sniper" to cure all our ills. - Tomahawk
I'm going to guess Crosby. |

I'd consider him a better playmaker than a "pure finisher", but in the same way that Gretzky was a better playmaker than a finisher. |

Then there's Buffalo. Darcy Regier plays his cards very tight. Interestingly, three different teams have talked about how much they like Thomas Vanek even though the Sabres aren't scoring much. What does hurt Regier here is the perception Vanek wants to go to Minnesota. No one is saying there's any tampering going on, I'm not even sure the Wild can do it cap-wise, and a lot can change in eight months. But there's circumstantial evidence. He went to school there, has a home there and his wife is from there.
