I never thought I would say this, but they miss Briere's example. He may have been on the downside, but he scored greasy goals (when he was scoring) and went to the ugly parts of the ice.

He was the smallest guy out there and was always around the net when he was playing well.

Giroux.......jesus what the hell happened here? Why has the slot become kryptonite to you?

I wanted to reach through the screen last night when he passed up the shot on that 3 on 1. TAKE THE SHOT, even if you have nothing to shoot at, keep it low because you have two other players in good positions for rebounds....

As for Simmonds, please just go to the net and do not try to carry the puck anywhere.

Agree with everything except Breire. The last 2 years he was not getting greasy goals, and isn;t it amazing that this team has gone from allowing 3-4 goals against to only about 2? Briere was aweful on defense.

That goes without saying.

The whole mix is screwed up. But why? Why have they all stopped scoring, going to the net, forgotten how to pass? I seem to remember them all individually being able to do these things in the past. Well, except for Simmonds, but he used to be good at winning board battles and scoring ugly goals within three feet. (hard to do that when no one is getting the puck to the net)

The defense has been fine. Its the offense that sucks ass.

Not just the leadership, but his ability to carry the puck into the offensive zone, especially on the PP. so hard to knock off of the puck, he could keep it in the zone and make things happen.

As am I, and they needed to move on. But it still doesn't change the point. I think he may have shamed other bigger players in to getting to the bad areas because of how small he was.

Now, as I CLEARLY said in my first post, he hasn't been that player, at least in the reg season, for a while. But he still had that pedigree.

The main point was that they need a new example, and no one has stepped up to provide it.

Vanek would help the team, but it would be a very short-sighted move. If they're in a playoff spot at the TDL, he'd be nice. But he's gonna command a HUGE return. Like Iginla x 3.

Vanek is the very last thing this team needs. I think I would take three years missing the playoffs to having Vanek on my team...

Can you imagine. Instead of Couts and Laughton we could have had Hamilton and Maata.
- youarewrong

seriously how can they all be judged already? Hamilton and Maatta could both easily level off and do nothing moving forward. Only time will tell one way or another.

They're not getting a Weber, Pietrangelo, Subban, etc.

They have to find a guy who isn't playing top pairing minutes or perceived as one, but whom the Flyers think can be that guy if given the opportunity.

- bradleyc4

Instead of getting that ONE guy, assembling a better/deeper mix in the meantime while you keep trying to draft/poach a future #1 could be the least costly option.

While they're not top-pairing guys, Michael Stone, Alec Martinez, Nikita Nikitin Tyson Barrie, and Jamie McBain are all puck-movers who've been caught up in the numbers game and have been in and out of their teams' lineups.... none would cost too much, and all have top-4 potential.

Tim Erixon is also tearing up the AHL, but the Jackets have too many of those types on the roster already... maybe there's a deal to be made there. And Rundblad is still out there, too.

Adding Vanek is appealing, but he's going to cost a ton to get in a trade, and assuming he signs, you're looking at another $8mm+ cap hit.

Buffalo, at a guess, will want Voracek or Simmonds, Couturier or Laughton and a 1st rounder or two to make it work. They got a ton for Pominville, doubt they sell Vanek cheaply

You know damn well that every non-Flyer pick is a HOFer as soon as they show a good year, while every Flyers' prospect is doomed to be a failure as soon as any struggles set in.

We should trade Couturier, Schenn, and Laughton for Hamilton. Hell, might as well just include the next 15 years worth of first rounders since we can never draft a good player.

Simmonds and Hartnell before getting hurt have irritated me beyond belief. their bread and butter in in front of the net and on the wall digging out pucks. Have they forgotten this? there is NO net presence and Simmonds seems to lose every puck battle. I cringe when he has the puck on the PP.

Rundblad and Erixon have had their shots and seem like they're destined for Danny Syvret-type careers. very good AHL players, but can't translate it to the NHL. Erixon in particular has already been to 3 different organizations. Alec Martinez I'd like, and i think Jamie McBain would be a nice pickup too.

I'm wondering if, before he left, Shelley gave the deer-in-headlights when handling the puck sickness to Simmonds.

My problem is that it would be further proof that this org doesnt understand how to win...

Right now the Flyers are really in a good spot for the future... They have some solid prospects coming up the ranks in Laughton, Haag, and Morin... they have a very young core group of forwards that all have really good skill sets. Just be patient. If we miss the playoffs again this year and next we get a few more good players. Eventually we need to restock the cupboards. Draft well, and surround your core group with complimentary players.

Worked well for Pitt, Chi, Colorado, Stl, TB and Toronto..

True, but how many teams that NEEDED a RW and had many NHL Defenseman, passed up Giroux to select another defenseman....
- youarewrong

I had to take a look at the draft. 10 centers, 4 Wingers, 5 dmen (including Johnson #1) and 2 goalies were selected before G,

Yes, I would not be interested in a player that has averaged 35 goals per season in his whole career and is almost a point per game player. I'm sorry, can you tell me what Flyers player has done this?
