I thought that Emery was going to be the guy. But I'm ecstatic with the way Mason has played. And I hope he keeps it up. I guess it's better if it's Mason because he is younger and doesn't have that injury history. - MJL
Exactly. In the end if one of then took over the job by merit of their play I was going to be happy. Since it's mason who is younger, it's only better! At least one guy is doing all the right thins out there. Hopefully others are payin attention. |

Based on age and contract, it was going to be Mason's net to lose. Emery on a 1-year deal was just a very secure safety net for the kid... and a kind of fail-safe for the team. Too bad they didn't hedge their bets as well with the rest of the roster... |

hartnell playing tonight>? - Winning
Yes, but I'm hoping they don't bump Cooter or Gus off the PP for him. |

it seems that going into the season that they could prob use another scorer or a grittier 3rd line type. homer must have at least agreed w/ the latter trying to bring in cleary.
bruner or even raymond might have added something to the mix, but i can't kill homer for not bringing in either one of those. the cap crunch also cost him any chance to shake up the d more after he decided to bring streit in. |

Hartnell's off to the same start he had a couple years ago, and a switch to a lower line and less ice time seemed to snap him out of it.
Of course, when it's happening to the entire team, you can't lessen everyone's ice time; they have to struggle through it.
I'd like to see one of the 'major' players start scoring and have everyone else loosen the hell up.

Pronger counting against the summer cap in full is going to be a constant offseason impediment for years to come... especially if Homer keeps completely blowing his offseason budget already come the first week of July. |

you'll get no argument from me there...that's part and parcel of the lack of a succession plan thing that Bill mentioned a couple of days ago... |

if you're referring to the flyers, i'm not knocked out w/ raffl on the 1st line, but i understand why he's there...at least, i'm watching the guy play and reading the berube quotes, anyway. |

I know there hasn't been much for you guys to be upbeat about this season.. but I wanted to see what you thought of Mark Streit so far, all you hoped for, or lacking?
XxNYIxX - XxNYIxX
no goals and an anemic power play so it isn't like he's been the savior, but with everyone playing so poorly it would be difficult to assess his contribution fairly at this point |

i watched that isles game until i couldn't take any more blatant non-calls against the pens. a fairly officiated game would have the shot totals more even if not favoring the isles. the isles skate hard and try like hades to get the puck from the other team. also, after they tied the game at 2-2 in the third engelland scored about 6 seconds later to put the pens back up 3-2; islanders did not sag for 5 minutes and let the game get away like some teams tend to do. i was impressed. i would say if the isles look like they did last night and the flyers look like they did against the rags they will lose 5-1 or worse. isles will be the ones on the PP all night and 5 on 5 play for the flyers is just hard to watch right now |

truthfully, i thought they should do it the way it has played out. my belief was that mason might still be fragile enough that sitting would not be good for him, while emery has said (and proved) he can tolerate that role effectively. let mason start and build confidence, which he has, and let emery spell him, which he has struggled with. i think if the team can play like we thought they were capable of then emery will be ok. i do not think either guy can carry this team if the play fails to improve dramatically |

Well Mason has been carrying them thus far....they'd be winless if it wasn't for him.
That being said, you said the Ray struggled in the games he played. I disagree. I thought he's played well. Yeah his numbers aren't good, but the team in front of him was disgraceful (see that Habs game). No goalie would have stolen those games. |

Uh...ok then. My reading comprehension skills are normally pretty proficient.
I thought you were saying that Emery has struggled coming off the bench thus far, evidenced by the "which he has struggled with" or whatever. And then towards the end you wrote something like "I don't think either goalie can carry this team unless the play in front of them improves"....which is why I pointed out Mason has been scintillating this year.
I don't understand. |

emery's struggles are due, in part, to bad team play which needs to improve; although i would say he has not really been sharp. at 2-7 i would say mason isn't really carrying them, although i do agree they are 0-9 without his play. if he had managed to have 3 SO and 4+ wins that would be closer to carrying the team. regardless, my point was that no goalie could keep this team alive if the team play doesn't get fixed in a gig way. |

We are in agreement!
I'll concede that saying Mason is carrying the team is kind of weird, since normally we talk about someone carrying a team into the playoffs etc....bottom line is usually when a player carries a team they carry them to a WINNING RECORD
Regardless, Mason has been the team's best and most consistent player thus far. Kind of refreshing, but then I remember their record.
Goddamnit. |
