thanks. Same goes for Moulson - mighty13duck
You all clearly got the best player in the deal, and a guy that will solidify your top-6 tremendously. I think Vanek will be under less pressure, physically and performance-wise in the Island which should be a boon to him.
I always liked Vanek, even if I was frustrated with him from time to time. I expect him to tear it up with JT and wish him all the best. I personally plan to give him a standing ovation next time he's in the building - I do hope they do more for Vanek than they did for Pomminville this year.
All that said, this was also a solid deal for the Sabres. We essentially got 2 good picks in next years' draft and a stopgap replacement for Vanek for the rest of this brutal season. There wasn't really anyone ready for that top-3 role on our team, so the Moulson pickup is important in that light. I don't think we will make any serious attempt to resign him, and may move him on for even more future come the deadline.
I don't however think you'll try and move Vanek unless you are well out of the playoff picture come late February, which would shock me. This move may make it more difficult to acquire defensive / goaltending help, but we will see. |

I asked this on another thread but how is Vanek on shootouts? - mighty13duck
He is very good in shootouts. The Isles will definitely pick up some extra points with Vanek in shootouts. |

To say that the Isles got hosed is a bit silly...
Moulson is not a 30 goal scorer without Tavares, he might not even be a 20 goal scorer without him.
Think about how much less pressure there is on Vanek with Tavares passing to him.
Obviously though, this all hinges on Vanek resigning with the Isles, which I dont see why not.
However, though, this doesnt solve the gaping hole in the defense, if anything this trade made the hole bigger. Vanek does not play defense. - aecliptic
agreed with everything but defensively its impossible to be worse than moulson. impossible! |

nope...just clarifying
EDIT: fair deal for both teams...isles want to win now or soon...sabres are about to go through a rebuild. the picks arent going to be seen on NHL ice for 3-4 years (or so) |

We're playing all 4 of our first rounders from the past two seasons, 3 look pretty good too.

Edit: that new barn is sick, by the way. I think it'll be a huge lift for the franchise. |

3-4 years...
1st rounder (3 years): all of this year, next year (most 15-20 1st rounders dont play the year they are drafted), maybe the year after that "he" will hit the ice, most like 2016
2nd rounder (4 years), all of this year, next year, 2015 he gets drafted (most likely wont play for at least that year, prob 2)
either way...both teams got assets they needed. isles are better today and sabres are stockpiling picks...17 1st and 2nd round picks from now till 2015 |

Moulson is only decent because he plays with JT...
It is scary to think what JT and Vanek do together...
Terrible, terrible trade for Isles if Vanek doesn't resign. |

Well we will get a chance to see. Clearly Hodgson isn't in the same class at JT, but if Moulson can make a living cleaning up garbage in front of the net there's no good reason to think he'll completely forget how to do it here. I'd be insane not to anticipate a drop in production given his new linemates, but he should still be able to put up some kind of production here. |

Great move for both teams . Islanders get an elite winger to work with JT . The Sabres get the draft picks to continue the rebuild plus a good player to fill the roster spot left by Vanek . That is what good hockey trades are all about . I hope Vanek appreciates what the Islanders gave up for him . And if all goes well he resigns there . Then everyone wins |

Great points! If Vanek gives it a chance, he is in a great spot! Things will only get better for the Islanders. The best prospects are not even on the team yet. The new building in Brooklyn should also be able to attract other top players. |

Come deadline you will probably be without a 1st rounder for the next 2 years if you acquire a goalie, just think priority should have been defense or goaltending |

Yea but in that case draft picks are like cash to buy the assets you need. And you spend a good about of that "cash" on Vanek and are not left with much "cash" to trade for defense and goaltending. I think that's more his point. But I do like the point someone else mad. Worst case if you're out of it by the deadline, you can always trade him at the deadline and recoup some of that back. |

that is true...it was a hefty price...a calculated risk. if he resigns it was well worth it. |

Just wait until you get one taste of Vanek's slapper and you won't be complaining... that is, if the Isles make the playoffs.
Vanek was the best player in this deal. The picks might have indicated a high price, but if the Isles rebuild is truly over, Vanek could be a crucial player. - BuffaJoe
Agreed. The price is high but if it works out it's a great deal for us. High risk high reward. |
