Honestly, he's been struggling in his own end the last few games.

Granted, he hasn't been the only one. I think that it's easier to sit the struggling rookie than the struggling veteran

I can only hope that all of the extra skating and systems work, as well as watching the games, means that Andrej Meszaros will come in and really be better, make a difference.

I'm totally serious when I say this: I don't expect him to be a $5 million player, playing 22 minutes a night, driving the play from the defensive end. I honestly don't expect that from him.

But I don't think it's unreasonable for a player with his experience level and ability to be effective in 17-18 minutes against lesser competition than Grossmann-Coburn face. Make smart plays. Don't get hemmed up in your end because you make a weak play or a weak first pass. Move with a purpose. Pass with some authority and accuracy. Handle the puck with the amount of ability and composure a 27-year-old first-round pick should have.

Again: I'm not expecting Meszaros to be a 32-year-old Kimmo Timonen. But it would be nice if he simply played well enough to be a net positive for the Flyers on the third pair.

That's not too much to ask.

I keep getting the feeling that Gus (btw not a rookie anymore) is being judged by different standards compared to all other D-men. Him being an undrafted European working his way up to NHL the hard way seems to be his undoing. Sometimes I wish, for his sake, that he'll get traded to another team that would appreciate him more.

Ugh. You kinda knew that was the case, but Darcy Regier basically spells out to Pierre LeBrun that the Sabres are looking to draft highly, i.e., tanking.

Ugh. I hate that. It will never happen because bottom feeders love to cry about "needing to have the opportunity to get better for their fans when we're terrible," but I wish the NHL went to a "every team gets one ball in the lottery, and draft order is set by those balls being picked, 30 down to 1."

I understand that no team will be great every year. But tanking for a top two or three pick...it just has always bothered me and always will bother me.
