@DarrenDreger, Vanek was offered to the Leafs... but given cap restraints, I imagine, wasn't happening.
I assume they wanted Kuli and that 1st and 2nd. Good on ya Nonis - SameOld
And how do they make the cap work? It makes no sense. |

You don't pay a shutdown D $7,000,000. 3 years at $5.5 is what he is worth, otherwise he will handcuff the Leaf as he ages and his talents diminish. When it will be time to pay your up and coming you stars (Reilly, Gardiner, Bernier, Kadri etc) you will regret having signed Dion for 5 years + and $7,000,000. - Champ
Says who? You? I dont think one team would offer him that little of a contract. And i trust GMs opinions on what a guys worth is |

Come on man.... Dion has been great these first 12 games... - SofaKingBored
he's been good, but can be great if he worked on his conditioning....both he and management know he eats minutes, but way too often he's been out there sucking wind.....they got 2 ship him out to Gary Roberts training camp in the offseason |

Totally believe that unless you are in the best physical condition you can get, you will never play to your potential. |

who plays the tough minutes? no one seems to think about that. See saturday vs Pit as an example - clark_griswold
Franson has been stepping up his defensive game rather well. Yes he has been playing against worse competition than Phaneuf, but I would rather give him a shot than pay Phaneuf for another 7 years at that ridiculous salary. Gunnarson has been a solid D-man that has covered up for Phaneuf plenty. If you need someone to give Franson guidance, he could easily be used.
I don't know how everyone thinks Phaneuf is a great #1 d-man. He is slow, makes bad decisions, and has terrible self-control for a captain. Granted he has played better this year, I cannot justify a 7 year contract at that price with his abhorent play during the previous years we have had him.
Put Fraser and Franson back together for the top line, or give Gunnarson/Franson a chance for now. At 7 Million he is into Weber territory and there is no chance in hell you can convince me that he is half the d-man Weber is. |

I would give Phaneuf 8.5M over 10 years...because I'm a Sens fan.
Realistically, 6M is tops. |

They must have been asking a lot. If Moulson is what they wanted from NYI they were probably asking for Kadri from Toronto. - Jeffmt
Ya was thinking the same maybe worse JVR. I don't see a fit at all on this team. Although I am liking the thought of Raymond-Bolland-Clarkson line. |

I don't think anyone here thinks he's a great #1 dman, but he's our #1 dman and he's the best we got. Without hm, are defence becomes a lot worse than it already is.

You say Phaneuf is slow but you want slowpoke Fraser on the top pairing? He was an AHL lifer before last season. |

Franson is horrendous Defensively. No other way to put that. Also, franson would have to start playing upwards of 26 mins per game. Good luck with that. Fraser is a 5-6 Dman at best. If we lost Dion, we'd be toast. We have enough forward depth where we could even lose kessel and be fine for a stretch. Same with goalies. If we lost Dion we would be in shambles. It's funny how people don't see that. |

Incorrect.
You are worth what you can get in an open market.
Dion can get 7.5 x 7 in the open market easy.
The question is does he want to take a slight discount to play in the hockey capital of the world and be the Captain of that team. - SameOld
Not on a Stanley Cup contender, and that is why they are Stanley Cup contenders because they don't overpay for Dion type D for more than one year. Pit would never trade, Letang for Dion, LA would not trade Doughty for Dion, Chi would not trade Seabrook, Keith or Leddy for Dion, Min would not trade Suter, Nsh would not trade Weber, Mtl would not trade Subban, etc etc etc. Edm and Philly can over pay cause they really need a D. Dion is comparable to Bieksa and I'll take Bieksa cause he is cheaper. |

Top 10 dumbest posts I've seen on this site.
The Leafs are so unbelievebly bad without Phaneuf on the back end, it's scary to think about. - SameOld
^THIS!
Last season Phaneuf was in the top 10 in points and 6th in goals. The year before Phaneuf had more points than Letang, Yandle, Keith, Doughty, and Subban.
If you were him would you take a paycut?
Leafs fans need to get their heads out of their butts. Leafs without this guy are just a lottery pick team. |

If all those teams would never trade those guys, how do people expect us to get one of them? We already have Dion, so its what we work with. |
