if 50 for 7 years is his starting point maybe we can get him to do something like 48 over 8. |

Last season Phaneuf was in the top 10 in points and 6th in goals. The year before Phaneuf had more points than Letang, Yandle, Keith, Doughty, and Subban. If you were him would you take a paycut?
Leafs fans need to get their heads out of their butts. Leafs without this guy are just a lottery pick team. - 13LEAFS01

He's asking for Doughty money - Killbot460
I take it you've never negotiated anything in your life?
The goal is to ask and try to receive as much as possible, so your original asking limit is always more |

The Leafs with this guy were a lottery pick team? More years than not. One guy doesn't make a team. |

I think what he means is our team is worse without him. |

If all those teams would never trade those guys, how do people expect us to get one of them? We already have Dion, so its what we work with. - TonkaPhaneuf
That is why I said 3 years will you develop your young Defensive core. I think longer than 4 and he will hurt you down the road. Better hope Nonis holds him at nothing more than $6 mil. He is not worth what those other guys are worth. |

Like all negotiations, the opening positions are always going to be inflated. A high number is to be expected.
Plus, like most players, he'd take max term in exchange for a lower number.
I'm thinking, in the end, he signs a deal that's about $50M/8yrs ($6.25M/yr) - jnwood2517

Franson has been stepping up his defensive game rather well. Yes he has been playing against worse competition than Phaneuf, but I would rather give him a shot than pay Phaneuf for another 7 years at that ridiculous salary. Gunnarson has been a solid D-man that has covered up for Phaneuf plenty. If you need someone to give Franson guidance, he could easily be used.
I don't know how everyone thinks Phaneuf is a great #1 d-man. He is slow, makes bad decisions, and has terrible self-control for a captain. Granted he has played better this year, I cannot justify a 7 year contract at that price with his abhorent play during the previous years we have had him.
Put Fraser and Franson back together for the top line, or give Gunnarson/Franson a chance for now. At 7 Million he is into Weber territory and there is no chance in hell you can convince me that he is half the d-man Weber is. - mfreedman
All the indictments of Phaneuf are based on these stupid subjective observations of his game, about how he's slow, he makes bad decisions, he pinches at the worst times. The problem is, when you actually quantify his game the numbers don't back any of that up. I wonder why that is.

Hahaha funny an Edmonton fan is laughing.
If he hits the open market you're going to be getting a worse contract than what he's currently asking. - SameOld
Its ridiculous the contracts players get on the open market. I am only laughing because of the contract Lowe gave Horcoff Just reminds me of that.
I have nothing to be happy about in Edm. I can only hope. So this season im pulling for the leafs as the Canadian team to go all the way. Just hope they don't overpay Phanuef like they did to Clarkson |

Even if they settle at 7, its not a big deal, cap goes up every year, players are gonna get paid regardless, and we have NO EFFIN WAY of replacing him any time soon. |

point is, find that guy. NO UFA and then you enter the trade market, good luck with that. That's why when people say 'this guy isn't worth the $$$' it's sometimes about not having to give up anything to get him.
For everyone who says Phaneuf is terrible, i have NEVER seen a realistic replacement option. Seen a few NHL '14 for xbox like trades, but that's about it - clark_griswold
I realize I'm stating the obvious, but you don't pay a guy top price just because you can't find a "real" number one....that's bad business! |

Fair enough but our young defense core consists of puck movers more than shut down guys. In four years from now, who knows what could happen. We have our forward core locked in for the next five years. Have to try to win sometime in the present and we need a shutdown guy of his caliber to do so. |

Yep, I'd almost want to see him hit the market just to see what his true value around the league is, from people who are actually qualified to assess a player's value. I have a feeling he would get the 50/7yrs. |
