I realize I'm stating the obvious, but you don't pay a guy top price just because you can't find a "real" number one....that's bad business! - LeftCoaster
But what if he is a number #1?

If I were a GM I wouldnt go beyond a 6 year deal. With Phaneuf Being 34 at the end of it.

Max is 7 years going to a different team. Or 8 years if you resign with the team you currently play for. |

Yes Dion is as good as Drew Doughty He's worth 7.8 that Weber makes actually. - Killbot460
Weber also got something ridiculous like 14 years. There's a big difference. |

Franson is horrendous Defensively. No other way to put that. Also, franson would have to start playing upwards of 26 mins per game. Good luck with that. Fraser is a 5-6 Dman at best. If we lost Dion, we'd be toast. We have enough forward depth where we could even lose kessel and be fine for a stretch. Same with goalies. If we lost Dion we would be in shambles. It's funny how people don't see that. - clark_griswold
Franson is one of players with a positive Corsi relative to Quality of competition. The others are Rielly (although worse) and Phaneuf and Gunnarson. Gunnarson is nearly matched to Phaneuf in numbers this year and can be more than helpful in guiding Franson while he assumes top spot on the blue-line.
Just for reference btw taking this year out of the equation, Phaneuf's Relative Corsi was one of the worst ont he team over his many years playing for the leafs. In fact, last year he was nearly as bad as komisarek. Franson was far better, even though he wasn't too great himself. The year before that, Franson led the team in Relative Corsi. My point is that while his corsi may be lowering a bit, his QofC is increasing every year and he can soon be ready to make a transition to top minutes.
Keep in mind that so far this year, here is the breakdown of TOI/60 for the Leafs:
Phaneuf - 16.74
Gardiner - 16.10
Gunnarson - 15.67
Ranger - 15.55
Reilly - 15.13
Franson - 14.70
Fraser - 8.84 (Skewed because of time missed)
That just goes to show you that PHaneuf is not playing much more than most other d-men these days. We would be better served using his cap to pick up a stable d-man and transitioning one of Rielly, Gardiner, or Franson into his role. |

Phaneuf is a real number one. He's a top 15 defenseman, that's a #1 in my book. - Jeffmt
You honestly think that? I just don't see it! Niklas Kronwall a good current comparison? |

phaneuf will be an even better player after another season or two with Carlyle.
6-7 is not unreasonable at all.
then add orpik in the off season for 4.5.

Last season Phaneuf was in the top 10 in points and 6th in goals. The year before Phaneuf had more points than Letang, Yandle, Keith, Doughty, and Subban.
If you were him would you take a paycut?
Leafs fans need to get their heads out of their butts. Leafs without this guy are just a lottery pick team. - 13LEAFS01
And this year all those you mentioned will have more points barring injury. |

that was a day that I realized there was a hockey god. A 3rd/2nd line winger that had a pretty good year started making 1st line money. In a cap world as well. |

Even if they settle at 7, its not a big deal, cap goes up every year, players are gonna get paid regardless, and we have NO EFFIN WAY of replacing him any time soon. - Bigzby
he'll get the money. look at the FA list after next year and tell me who's better than phaneuf? he's the best D on the market if they let him get to FA and I can't see it happening.

Are you legitimately this dumb?
You are worth what you can get in an open market moron.
If Dion can get 7.5 x 7 from Edmonton which will guaranteed be offered. That's what he's worth because that's what someone is willing to pay for his services. |
