I think he's an excellent 2D. He needs someone better than Gunnarsson to play with, and Gunnar would be more effective playing against 2nd forward lines.

after the first time, kipper said well he is #1 where he is now, and mccoun said that's the only team, at best Phaneuf is the 31st best d in the league because 30 teams that arent the leafs wouldnt pay him as #1..

must have been heavy into the sauce, cause he was dead serious.

Buffalo almost made Vanek the highest paid player in all the league (glad we traded him, although he's very good)

By year 2 or 3 of that deal, every #1D in the league coming up for contract renewal will be making 7mil. No doubt.

Pay the man! Our D lacks a good leader without him. Obviously if the guys on the ice for that long he'll be exposed for more mistakes but his intensity totally makes up for it. Been very impressed with his improvement on the defensive side this year

But not a "game changer"
He's the type of guy that can look better or worse based on the team around him
Not exactly the kind of guy I wanna pay top $$$ for
