Actually even as it is there are huge decisions to be made before next year. - aminnes
not really.
phaneuf at 6-7 changes nothing. |

Let him walk and use the money to sign Grabo, extend Ranger long term, and give Bozak his well deserved raise. - Bigzby

And when he didn't last year, he looked very Phaneuf-ish, which apparently isn't elite. But Weber is still considered 'elite' - peddy-93
As long as they keep winning, I could give a frank what they pay him. |

if that is the case, even more reason for him to get into better shape....that being said, every player should be working on conditioning....can only imagine where Kessel's game would be if he worked out. - 10baci
Phaneuf is in pretty excellent shape. You're way off here. |

Ed Snider gave Mark fricken Streit 5M/yr.
You think he wouldn't pay Dion $7M?
And Phaneuf knows he will get paid as an UFA.
Not saying you guys should re sign him or not, just that under 7M seems pretty optimistic.

Signing him for anything more than what he makes - even at what he makes - means next year someone big has to be moved, and moving 2 million away or something isn't going to cut it. If keeping him means moving out one top six forward or even 2 guys off the third line would hurt the club maybe more then him leaving. Either way wait. Wait, because Dion often looks very good to start seasons, and then tires, and then looks like he did in the playoffs. In three months there may be no reason to think he should get any kind of a raise, just like the thought of amy kind of a raise was found to be silly after last season ended. - aminnes
Remember when you said the leafs were screwed this summer and couldn't get it a done? Turns out you were wrong, and they also added more.
I'm willin to bet you'd be wrong again. |

Or we're you talking about RNH getting over $6m for scoring 4 goals? - Big_Lightnin
HEY! Dont talk about their first line center like that! He might be put on the IR with broken feelings.
Just dont insult his 12 year old boy. That might put him over the top |

He just gets worked over a alot. There are shifts where he's in for 2 minutes. Why? Not because he chooses to, but because the Leafs can't get the (frank)ing puck out of the zone. |

It's a tough spot. Though I didn't vote since I didn't agree with any of the poll options. You hold onto Phaneuf and try to go down from the current starting point.
Regardless if Phaneuf is gone the defense is going to crumble. No one else on that blueline can replace those minutes against the best scorers in the league. Certainly has his flaws, but the team would have to replace him instantly or it'd be backpedaling down to the basement.
Not that I want to give him a raise for max term, that's just excessive and will be difficult to manage around. Just have to find a way to whittle the price down to something manageable. |

liles, pick and prospect / player
vanek
as for phanuef.... we need him
we have no "phaneufs" in the system, and you wont find one in UFA. Hell you couldnt sign two players for 7 mil to replace the mins he skates or what he does |

Are you legitimately this dumb?
You are worth what you can get in an open market moron.
If Dion can get 7.5 x 7 from Edmonton which will guaranteed be offered. That's what he's worth because that's what someone is willing to pay for his services. - SameOld
He won't come here, no one will
Honestly I think he would get around 7-7.5 in July. I'm just saying I don't think he's worth it. When has he had a 20+ goal season???
Actually come to think of it he's worth 8.5 million. Get it done.

Dude, next years cap means cahnges, and getting fraser and franson at the rates they did only delayed the inevitable. And the additions, while I will enjoy this season have put then right at the cap. Whats the bet? That they get under? They will, but someones gone, maybe its franson and or fraser, maybe it's someone else. |

Yes, it's in the leafs end because Phaneuf has already fanned on his clearing attempt and then fell down |

I dont think so, but thats ok. He probably doesnt play 10-12 minutes in the 3rd period anyway, considering his average per game is 24. I dont think he only plays 6minutes in the 1st and 2nd if your numbers are right.
Many games i've seen him standing in front of the net catching his breath, and then getting his 2nd wind and going after the opposing player. Hey its life we all see things differently. Some like Mary Ann some like Ginger......its all good |

Yup, and then he's right back out there 45 secs later and looks fresh. There is zero conditioning issue.
Know what breathing hard means? It means he's working hard. Every shift. |

What are the more realistic cap predictions for next year? Over 70M? |
