Fair point. Edmonton is better off without Clarkson. - SameOld
He's a similar type of player the oil need. Don't get me wrong. But is he worth more than Nuge or Hall.... no he's not. At 3.5-4 million it be a good deal but the 6 million Edm apparently offered Anyway good on him to take less for his home town.
Good luck for the leafs tonight, I just bet against My Oilers.... again |

Dude, next years cap means cahnges, and getting fraser and franson at the rates they did only delayed the inevitable. And the additions, while I will enjoy this season have put then right at the cap. Whats the bet? That they get under? They will, but someones gone, maybe its franson and or fraser, maybe it's someone else. - aminnes
exactly. it goes way up. |

I realize I'm stating the obvious, but you don't pay a guy top price just because you can't find a "real" number one....that's bad business! - LeftCoaster
bad business is standing for a principal that gets in the way of winning. |

What are the more realistic cap predictions for next year? Over 70M? - jnwood2517
at least, some say upwards to 76 |

The cap is going up, they have buyout money coming off the books. They'll be fine. They'll work something out.
Just like this summer when they couldn't sign kadri and franson becuase they wasted all their money on bolland..... Turns out they had enough to get both done and still add a piece. |

Franson is one of players with a positive Corsi relative to Quality of competition. The others are Rielly (although worse) and Phaneuf and Gunnarson. Gunnarson is nearly matched to Phaneuf in numbers this year and can be more than helpful in guiding Franson while he assumes top spot on the blue-line.
Just for reference btw taking this year out of the equation, Phaneuf's Relative Corsi was one of the worst ont he team over his many years playing for the leafs. In fact, last year he was nearly as bad as komisarek. Franson was far better, even though he wasn't too great himself. The year before that, Franson led the team in Relative Corsi. My point is that while his corsi may be lowering a bit, his QofC is increasing every year and he can soon be ready to make a transition to top minutes.
Keep in mind that so far this year, here is the breakdown of TOI/60 for the Leafs:
Phaneuf - 16.74
Gardiner - 16.10
Gunnarson - 15.67
Ranger - 15.55
Reilly - 15.13
Franson - 14.70
Fraser - 8.84 (Skewed because of time missed)
That just goes to show you that PHaneuf is not playing much more than most other d-men these days. We would be better served using his cap to pick up a stable d-man and transitioning one of Rielly, Gardiner, or Franson into his role. - mfreedman
im not knocking you, but corsi=gayyyyyy. Franson plays against much weaker competition.
PS, i stopped reading at 'corsi' |

He's a nice player at 4 or 4.5 million per. I say trade him asap. That way Nonis can evaluate the roster and any pieces brought in a Liles trade and a Phaneuf Trade and Randy can know what kind of roster he can dress. |

Yup, and then he's right back out there 45 secs later and looks fresh. There is zero conditioning issue.

I definately see both sides of the coin here. He is obviously very valuable to the team.Would put the team in a spot if we lose him next year. BUT signing him to a 7-8 year 7- 8 M contract isn't exactly a no risk move. Highly probable that kind of a contract screws us at some point too.
I think he wants to be here. He has an ego and likes being the captain of the leafs. And wants to win a cup here. I doubt he goes anywhere. My guess is he will get 6.something for 6 years. |

Phaneuf isn't going anywhere, he's a Carlyle player, if you don't like Phaneuf you're going to have to get used to him. |

He will get what he wants I believe, Leafs like him and I don't think there are to many UFAs coming available that can replace him. Love him or hate him he's here for life.
If a big IF right now, but if the cap goes to $76m who cares if it's $7m or $8m really. |

Sorry, but don't you think Regier phoned 29 other GM's and offered Vanek to everyone??? That's their job. Doesn't seem news worthy.
If Phaneuf gets that much that GM should be immediately fired. - Iggysbff

I doubt it. Doughty has dropped off. Subban, Letang will and so will Karlsson probably. I'm not sure about the rest.
