What we need is committed two way play from all 4 lines. No two offensive two defensive. If its a one goal game with 4 minutes left.. My two centers for those last two shifts would be Couts and G. - jak521
Nah. Our best teams always had a 2 lines that could play defense and 2 lines that scored. Think back to the SCF year. The Richards line and Lappy-Betts line were both shut-down lines and Giroux and Carters lines were scoring lines. |

We've traded a lot of our young assets over the years... some would argue more than any other team in the league... we just did a wholesale overhaul of our young core not 2 summers ago. The vast majority of the players on the roster were brought in via UFA/trade... only 3 guys are Flyers picks, and a couple were undrafted UFA's. That's it.
This isn't a team that has been clinging to the same tired faces for an eternity -- this is a team that has been shuffling new faces into the lineup NON STOP.
And we wonder where the chemistry, identity and consistency have gone. - Tomahawk
This team has been together for the last 3 years for the most part, and is getting worse each year, not better. Just because you go out and trade for a bunch of young guys doesn't mean they are the right young guys to move you into the future. Now that the team has played togther for a while, its time to determine who fits, who doesnt. Who is developing, and who isnt. Its time to reassess expectations. Couturier no longer looks like he could be the next Jordan Staal. Right now he looks like he could be a slightly better verison of Handzus.
Just like we currently have too many 2nd pairing d-men and ZERO 1st pairing d-men, we also have too many young talent with 2nd-3rd line potential and not enough 1st line talent. |

idk where to start from, we finally have a stud goalie and the team sucks, berube as coach has grown on me, g's best year was with jagr and i dont think gets ny better then that and then crowned captain too early cuz lavvy said he was the best player in the world, timmo needs to retire yesterday hes making a fool of himself out there, we need a new 4th line, vinny was an awesome pick up, thats all for now |

When Handzus was Staal's age, he had more 50 point seasons than Staal does and he was playing with John LeClair and Mark Recchi in a lower scoring era |

Exactly -- being Michal Handzus isn't exactly horrifying.
But the thing I noticed last night about Couturier is that he's still developing "man strength."
He's not the player he will be, a few years from now. I have no idea, no clue whatsoever, how many points he'll score. Maybe he doesn't become more productive as he gets stronger.
But he's still a young man, growing into that frame.

I wonder if we waited until now to give Giroux a contract, how much cheaper it might be.... |

The amazing thing with Shelley was not only the 3 year deal which is mind boggling to give to an enforcer in his mid 30's, but the 1.1 million dollar cap hit, which is double the going rate for goons.
Comical how anyone defended that signing.

I think his defensive game is going to excell beyond limit. But I just don't see any hint of developing into someone that is a scoring threat. He might get goals because of ice time, lucky bounces, etc.... But I doubt he will ever be someone you put out there for say a shootout. Or someone the other team dreads on a breakaway or 2 on 1. |
