Trade the entire back end (except for Luke Schenn) for Oliver Ekman-Larsson lol wishful thinking - justahockeyguy2
Flyers are just ripe to go out and overpay for Phaneuf in the summer.
Him or Buff will be on the team by next season, my testicles can feel it. |

How would they have gotten Carle at 4.75M cap hit? - MJL
By re-signing him in season, prior to the Calgary deal with Wideman.
Prior to that, Holmgren confidently spoke of getting a deal done with Carle for below market value, and it's been speculated that they had a handshake agreement on a deal for under $5mm.
The $4.75mm is a guess at a price. But signing Grossmann and using up the remaining tagging space meant having to wait on Carle, and subsequent deals made that untenable.
After the Striet deal, Carle at $5.5mm looks like a steal |

I still like my suggestion of Grossmann for Diaz and a 3rd rounder. |

They might have to face that they won't get market value. Timonen looks like he's dead on his skates. I can't see anyone giving up much for him. Hartnell has 12 point in his last 39 games. With a lot of years and money left on his deal, it's hard to see teams lining up there. Meszaros has been on the block for months...nobody wants him.
Fortunately two of those deals are off the books in July anyhow. - Jsaquella
I think it's very possible that both Meszaros and Timonen can be moved at the deadline. I could see a team looking to make a run wanting to add an experienced defenseman like Timonen to bolster the blueline to make a run. He won't have to be a top dog on a team like that.

As much as people love Big Buff, I sure as hell don't. I would not want him. And I cant find a reason why... |

I'd be fine with Phaneuf. He's a good defenseman, and would hands down be the Flyers top defenseman. He's still fairly young and plays very tough minutes for a playoff team. |

The team is not playing to the expected level. That's for sure. |

with a $6-mil contract? eh. I mean yeah I guess that could work since its only for a year, but that is a lot of cash |

Sure, at the TDL, for a 2nd rounder...like I said in the post, I can't see anyone giving up much for him.
As for Meszaros, they've been shopping him for months now. Again, perhaps at the TDL they can wring a 3rd or 4th rounder for him, if he stays healthy. |

Timonen and Meszaros...they don't matter as much because they're UFA. I can honestly say the Lecavalier's been better than I thought, and Mark Streit's been exactly what I thought. Hopefully, they will continue to at least be neutral-to-positive for another couple of years.
But Hartnell, and the combination of Grossmann/Luke Schenn...right now, they are struggling in some crucial areas of the game. All three of them on the roster just isn't working. - AllInForFlyers
Have to give Hartnell a little time coming off the injury. Not sure what the hell Schenn's issue is, but he hasn't had a good year to this point. I expect that to improve drastically. And Grossmann has been solid for most of the year.

At the trade deadline, most of that $6mm will be paid out and the cap impact will be minimal....but so will the return |

there are a lot of things that players can be taught, but heart and desire aren't one of them. This team has for the past several years lacked that. I just don't get how a team that of motivated players can stop playing after dominating the first period. Especially a team that is in dire need of wins. |

I think the word speculation is the key. We truly don't know what Carle was willing to re-sign here for. And I don't blame Holmgren for locking up other players, if a deal is dragging along. In hindsight, I certainly wish they had kept Carle rather then sign Streit. As Carle is significantly better. But let's not forget why I think they were willing to risk losing Carle. To catch a bigger fish. I'm fine with that.

Not a huge Phaneuf fan, and he's not the ideal player I'd be looking for. But I doubt the ideal player is going to be available. Phaneuf would definitely upgrade the Flyers defense.

That's fine and dandy, but signing Grossmann first and then trading for Schenn and losing Carle has really set them back. There was zero reason to rush into re-signing Grossmann and risking the loss of Carle, and trading for Schenn really left them without a puck mover and a good mobile guy.
If they had a handshake deal with Carle, getting it done should have been top priority, given the lack of mobile defensemen on the roster |
