I've been trying to be positive about things, and see both sides of it, but it's maddening to see the same sort of mistake be repeated time and again.
How nice would it be to plug JvR in next to Giroux right now? - Jsaquella
I try not to think about it. Can drive you a little bit nuts. Schenn needs to play better than this. He doesn't have to be Adam Foote. But he has got to be more than this -- and I say that as someone who wants him to succeed. |

night and day for G...JVR, for all of his warts, is a superior skill plyr and a better passer than anyone except G.
frankly, from that day on, i definately wanted homer outta here....he'd lost his touch and he was turning into bob clarke in many ways...i'm done w/ him like you were done w/ reid and the eagles. hope he makes me eat my words, but i strongly doubt it |

I want everyone wearing a Flyers jersey to succeed. I'd love to see Schenn become Adam Foote. I'd love to see Holmgren turn the ship around, just like I would have loved to see Laviolette turn it around.
I root for the team, and it sucks when they don't play well |

It is, and it's scary, because while everyone knew he would decline, no one knew that decline would be immediate. If this is what Hartnell is...oh, my gosh. |
|
|

it really messes up team depth to have to move your 2nd line center to wing on the 1st line to help improve your franchise $8 million player. Single biggest problem isn't a puck moving Dman it's a soon to be $8 million franchise player with zero confidence and is afraid to shoot! |

Not going to go there yet, but if Hartnell can't rebound then the move was to keep Briere, buyout Hartnell if you couldn't trade him and then fire Holmgren. LOL, hind sight. |

Dave Tippett, because look at what he's done with the Yotes. |

Paul MacLean. He did an amazing job with the Senators last year, and also Skip picked my first choice and you took my second |

I agree... nobody has consistently done more, with less, than Dave Tippett.
Babcock's a good coach, but the culture of winning there is hegemonic and owes to Bowman, and Holland's maintenance, more than any coach that's come after.
Guys like Julien, Quenneville, Sutter and Bylsma really benefit from having GMs with a coherent vision as well. All are good coaches, though.
And I still maintain that Lavi is a damned fine coach... pity how Homer undermined him constantly. |

If they weren't so busy pissing all their present and future cap dollars willy nilly, maybe they wouldn't run into impediments like tagging space when they're talking about locking up important pieces.
Shelley ($1.1M) + Walker ($1.7M), Lilja ($725K)... add them all together and get a pretty significant chunk of change tied up in essentially useless players (~$3.5M)... maybe just enough to get Matt Carle signed to a reasonable contract well in advance of UFA/Wideman. - Tomahawk
None of those contracts stopped the Flyers from doing anything they wanted to do.

He traded a very valuable asset in a trade that failed to address the team's biggest need when it was made, and 18 months later, that need is still the team's biggest weakness.
Considering that the player traded away has outperformed the player acquired from pretty much day one, and that the player acquired has regressed after a solid first season, then it's a questionable deal on two levels.
If you trade the most valuable asset you're willing to part with and fail to address your team's biggest need and that asset outperforms the one you acquired for him, then it's the wrong deal. - Jsaquella
I disagree with that two fold. First I disagree that JVR has outperformed Luke Schenn from day one. JVR has had the same periods of struggling that Schenn has. And trading for Schenn absolutely filled a huge need in the Organization, in adding a young promising defenseman at the NHL level. Bottom line is that it is extremely premature to call the deal a mistake.

Holmgren didn't undermine Laviolette. Laviolette undermined himself. He did a great job when he first came aboard. But last year, and the beginning of this Season, Laviolette was horrendous as a Coach. And really needs to do some soul searching on how he needs to adjust how he coaches. |

Every year the Flyers make moves and add players in Free Agency, and have money to spend. Can you prove that it did? You made the assertion, the onus is on you. I'm still waiting for you to prove that the 1.1M of Shelley's salary stopped the Flyers from re-signing Carle. |

IIRC, the question on deal day was not only about the value received in the trade, but why they acquired a skill set they had in some abundance while they clearly needed a puck mover they could move forward with. failing that, they were now stripped of the assets necessary to make such a trade, so they went to the craps table for weber and came up snake eyes....still no puck mover to match the career arc of the younger talent we have-Homer Fail.
you've been on point all nite. - isaiah520
This is continuing to narrow the scope and only looking at the factors that you want to look at, to label the trade a bad trade. Adding a young NHL defenseman with a lot of promise was an enormous need in the Organization. Now you only want to look at what type of defenseman they added, and say they didn't get the right kind of player.

So, Varlamov is in a little trouble.
If he is sentenced to, say, a year in jail. Will he still count against the cap? |
