YAY NOW WE HAVE A TOP-9 WINGER.!!!

Who needs guys who actually give 100% every shift?
Who needs guys who are playoff warriors?
Who needs a guy who will do whatever he's asked to in order to win?
Who needs leadership?

I guess the answer is Colorado.

We've had conversation after conversation on here about the Flyers needing a better 4th line, so they can roll 4 lines. What do you think better caliber role players such as Talbot cost?
- MJL

You don't have to spend money... you just need to get Rosehill out of the lineup.

Rinaldo/Holmstrom/Hall make pennies on the Max Talbot dollar, but that's still a better 4th-line than Rinaldo/Talbot/Rosehill

I don't knoww, but they could be -- Downie played on a very productive line with Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog before he injured his knee, would step in when Duchene would get roughed up.

Love this trade, pretty much everything Talbot can do with a little more offensive upside. Plus he is younger. Now I mean he did break his leg and all, but overall, I like this trade

Okay!! Hands up.

Who thinks we just traded for the same 19 year old kid we traded away five years ago and that his game hasn't changed in those years?

- mayorofangrytown

I've watched him a bit since he has been gone and I think he is a much better player since then and I don't dislike getting him BUT I hate moving Talbot. 1.75 is not unreasonable and under contract for 2 more years. He is a blood and guts guy every winner can use. put me in the same category that I was for Schenn for JVR. Like the acquisition, HATE what it took to get the player. I am not happy losing Talbot. not one bit

Yea some are very unhappy with the deal. I think it's a fair trade and Philly frees cap space up if they don't want to re-sign him.

I think that's an assumption. How many times was the 4th line of teams like Boston brought up in conversation? Campbell makes 1.6M, Thorton makes over a 1M. Seems like a contradiction to state that Talbot makes too much to be a 4th line player, after all that talk.

(frank) no. People act like Talbot's useless because, somehow, the team not scoring has a direct effect on him. Now we'll score more goals, but the goals scored against will go up because Talbot is one of the most underrated players in the league. I watched him for years in Pittsburgh, and (aside from his SCG heroics), you can see that he will do what it takes.

Now we have a (frank)ing guy who's still a punk who can't pick his spots, runs around like a nut, can't win a fight, and can't play defense. YAY!

Homer, get the (frank) out now.

Not sure that Downie measures up to Talbot in leadership, or PK and defensive checking ability.

Lol yeah we will see about that... I don't know who the Flyers would be talking about in St. Louis, unless its on the blue line. But they are all locked up on big deals.

I know what you mean. I love Talbot and what he brings, but I think Homer had to pull the trigger on this move for this team. They need scoring and Downie has proven himself to be a fine complimentary piece to top lines in the past.

They need to take some risks because this current team isn't the right mix together. If it doesn't work out, it's not going to set the franchise back 10 years.

I never mentioned Boston or spending money on 4th-liners... you're getting me mixed up w/ someone else.

I'm in a good mood from the Downie trade, now leave me alone.

Makes you wonder why Colorado would do the deal then...

The Colorado Avalanche on Thursday traded forward Steve Downie to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for forward Maxime Talbot.

Downie, 26, was drafted by the Flyers in the first round (No. 29) of the 2005 NHL Draft and spent parts of two seasons with the team before being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2008-09 season as part of a deal that sent Matthew Carle to Philadelphia.

The Avalanche acquired Downie on Feb. 21, 2012, in exchange for defenseman Kyle Quincey.

In 11 games this season Downie has one goal and six points. He had spent most of the season playing right wing on the Avs' most productive line, alongside center Matt Duchene and left wing Ryan O'Reilly.

He's in the final season of a two-year, $5.3 million contract and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

In seven seasons, Downie has 56 goals and 145 points in 285 games with the Flyers, Lightning and Avalanche.

Talbot, 29, has one goal and one assist in 11 games this season, and had the highest average shorthanded ice time per game among the club's forwards at 3:35.

"Maxime is a veteran forward who has won a Stanley Cup and has a lot of NHL experience," Avalanche Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic said. "We look forward to him bringing that experience to our club."

He has two more seasons remaining on the five-year, $8.75 million contract he signed in July 2011.

A nine-year veteran, Talbot has 77 goals and 154 points in 515 games with the Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins.

HOORAY! We have more offensive upside and a hole where the team's heart and work ethic used to be. Oh, but we have Adam Hall. And you know, those 4th line players are really interchangable. Lapperiere and Rosehill, Talbot and Hall, Otto and Dimaio, they're all the same.

Understood, but gives a little more offensive ability. We will see how this trade works out in the coming weeks. Leadership, no doubt about it. Agreed there. But played first line minutes.

You do realize that with all of those things, we're 3-8?

Before anybody freaks out, no, I'm not saying that's all Maxime Talbot's fault.

But we're 3-8. We can't keep everybody on the roster who's been here for the train wreck that's been the last year-plus.
