(frank) no. People act like Talbot's useless because, somehow, the team not scoring has a direct effect on him. Now we'll score more goals, but the goals scored against will go up because Talbot is one of the most underrated players in the league. I watched him for years in Pittsburgh, and (aside from his SCG heroics), you can see that he will do what it takes.
Now we have a (frank)ing guy who's still a punk who can't pick his spots, runs around like a nut, can't win a fight, and can't play defense. YAY!
Homer, get the (frank) out now. - jmatchett383
I think most people see the value of Talbot, but Downie provides some good things too. You have to give to get in a trade. Not every move can be Zhitnik for Coburn.
Like I said earlier, this move may not work out, but it won't set the franchise back at all if it doesn't. |

I never mentioned Boston or spending money on 4th-liners... you're getting me mixed up w/ someone else.
I'm in a good mood from the Downie trade, now leave me alone. - Tomahawk
You were in the mix of all the talk about needing a better 4th line. That cost more to get better 4th line caliber players. And goes against the grain with claiming that Talbot makes too much to play on the 4th line. |

Downie is tied for the lead in points for the Flyers as of today. I loved Talbot overall, but dear God we have to start scoring. - Hextall271
Seen a lot of posts like this in this thread. To those worried about the Flyers scoring, The net improvement in scoring from Downie will be offset by the loss of PK ability and intangibles that a guy like Talbot brought. Its only slightly better than a zero sum gain and I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that if your top line guys like Giroux aren't putting the puck in the net, it doesn't really matter what the bottom 6 guys do.

Just so you know, Talbot on a horrible team has as many goals as Downie on a fantastic team. |

I'm interested in seeing the line combinations for tomorrow night. Hopefully Rosehill sits and Hall centers the 4th line.
Raffl-Giroux-Vinny
Hartnell-Schenn-Voracek
Simmonds-Couts-Read
Rinaldo-Hall-Downie
Or does Downie swap with Raffl?
There's no reason why the talent in this lineup can't score 3 goals a game and give Mason a chance to hold the fort. |

Lol yeah we will see about that... I don't know who the Flyers would be talking about in St. Louis, unless its on the blue line. But they are all locked up on big deals. - justahockeyguy2

You do realize that with all of those things, we're 3-8?
Before anybody freaks out, no, I'm not saying that's all Maxime Talbot's fault.
But we're 3-8. We can't keep everybody on the roster who's been here for the train wreck that's been the last year-plus. - AllInForFlyers
We're 3-8? When did that happen?
We'll see what happens. Don't hate it, don't love it. |

To be frank, Giroux isn't nearly as good as Crosby or Malkin. Both of those guys can play with 3rd or 4th line grinders and produce points.
Most teams need to find the right mix in order to develop into a bonafide top line. The Downie move may help the Flyers develop a legitimate top line. If not, they let Downie walk and go out and sign a Talbot type player in the offseason |

Does anybody, anybody at all, want to acknowledge that we missed the playoffs last year with a Top 5 PK and all of these awesome leaders, and are 3-8 now?
Now, why did we miss the playoffs?
Because you still gotta outscore people. The way we were doing it wasn't working.
That's the bottom line. Being No. 1 on the PK and scoring 1.8 goals per game gets you what, exactly?
The No. 1 pick in the draft, that's what.

If we really traded Talbot to help out offense, and Downie is placed on the fourth line, Homer should be shot in the face. |

I've watched him a bit since he has been gone and I think he is a much better player since then and I don't dislike getting him BUT I hate moving Talbot. 1.75 is not unreasonable and under contract for 2 more years. He is a blood and guts guy every winner can use. put me in the same category that I was for Schenn for JVR. Like the acquisition, HATE what it took to get the player. I am not happy losing Talbot. not one bit - nastyflyergirl
No, I'm a big Talbot fan but what was he bringing this season. This team is soft and he's not doing anything to change that as much as I like him.
Rinaldo and Rosehill are fourth line players getting limited minutes thankfully.
Downie will play and he'll bring an edge that this group is sorely lacking. He played on the first line this season in Colorado and people loved him. His teammates love him. When he went out last season they lost a lot.
I can't believe they traded him. They must think they couldn't resign him because he's going to get bigger money. |

I really hope they didn't make this trade to play Downie on the 4th line. If they did, it doesn't make any sense at all. |

Roy and Talbot will probably get along quite well. And Talbot brings veteran leadership to a young team that's winning. Of course the whole Varlamov thing is a bit worrisome at this point in time... |

This trade is confusing to me, because of not being sure where Downie fits in this lineup.
Also, who assumes the PK responsibilities that Max used to hold down? I'm pretty sure Downie doesn't/hasn't play/played the PK.

The prolific offensive dynamo known as Steve Downie has a grand total of 1 goal playing on one of the most successful teams in the league. |

But we all know Downie is a better offensive player and better equipped to play with top tier talent.
They gave up a good player in Talbot, but they acquired a good player in Downie. They both just do different things. I think they both have fairly similar value, but this team needs more offense. |

Not a bad trade, but I'm not really a fan of it. Talbot had a good contract, I liked that cap hit and term for a steady bottom six presence. Still, gotta get goals somewhere. Is there another shoe to drop, perhaps a Hartnell or Simmonds trade? |
