He did have a 19 goal season. He has scored a Stanley Cup winning goal. He's a solid leader in the room. Not easy finding those guys for around a 1.5 cap hit. - PLindbergh31
maybe ... maybe not. Not taking anything away from Max, but all things considered it's not like we're losing an irreplaceable part. |

Few thoughts on Downie, sorry if they've already been beaten to death:
1. I like the deal, don't necessarily love it. I like Max Talbot, but Downie is young and has more upside. I question bringing in another guy that has discipline issues, but at the end of the day, Downie is the better player in the trade.
2. Colorado has a huge number of guys heading into UFA or RFA this summer. Stastny, O'Reilly, McGinn, Mitchell and Cliche up front, Sarich, Barrie on defense and both goalies. Talbot being signed to a reasonable deal was probably a factor as Downie is a UFA.
3. I'd be surprised if there's not another Flyers trade in no more than a week to ten days. This reeks of another shoe ready to drop. |

Downie definitely brings more offensively than Rinaldo. On that tangent, Carcillo also brings more offense than Rinaldo. - BulliesPhan87
I get the deal to an extent, and will be the first to admit that Talbot hasnt really been too hot for a while now.
The thing with Downie, is its such a risk employing a player like that. One that we, and Holmgren should know all too well. I dont mind Downie on the Flyers, but I think Talbot serves more of a purpose with the PK ability, and a run at Downie could have been made once his deal was up. |

You don't trade a top line winger for talbot unless you have some questions - funmaster18
Like we are not sure he will resign. And OMG anything to get people to stop talking about our wife beating goalie. |

There is truth to that, but the fact is that it's cheaper and easier to find guys to fill out the penalty kill than it is to find guys who can consistently create offense.
As we have already mentioned, there's no guarantee Downie will provide that missing offense, but he has a much better chance to do it than Talbot, who is past his prime at this point. I loved Talbot as a Flyer, but I think this could help offensively quite a bit, while we have other players who are able to kill penalties (Read, Hall, Couturier, maybe even Raffl) - mcefalu
We're talking about two different kinds of players here. We have to see how it plays out. Does the hopefully added offense make a difference. And can other players pick up what Talbot did for the team. |

You don't make a trade to distract people. You make them because it makes your team better. I don agree with that part. First part could have played into it. |

didn't say he had much value, only that he might be moved.

They kind of are. People are acting like Max Talbot is a run-of-the-mill 4th liner, and that good 4th line PK players are easy to replace. That is not the case at all. It's like saying Shjon Podein was easily replacable. Or Ian Laperriere. Or Joel Otto. they were all 4th line role players/PK specialists, but they were all fantastic at that role, and did it well. Not something you can just pick up. |

Talbot I thought came here on a mission when he first arrived, and has faded since.
He is a guy I would have had no issue dealing at the deadline. Its funny too, because I love guys like Rinaldo, Carcillo, and what-not.
I simply fear Downie and what his lack of discipline could do. Although the biggest concern? Downie is UFA after this season already being paid at a 2.65 cap hit. You just know Holmgren will give him a nice raise. |

A lot of that on the current crew, and signing Downie doesnt help it. Just wait until Holmgren gives him a 3.2million/year extension. |

Yes. All PKers are equal in value. Shjon Podein was really a dime-a-dozen player, nothing special. - jmatchett383
yea, almost as tough as getting a puck moving dman...i think you're over-reacting here |

Dont know if anyone may have brought this up earlier, but I have to wonder with the acquisition of Downie, a top 6 RW, if Simmonds is about to be moved in a package for a dman. |

Max is a good player. There are also other good players who can do what he did. Will they easily fill his skates? No, but the Flyers will find someone very much like him, I'm sure. |

I don't disagree (especially about Talbot's value to the team, he's a known commodity), but I'm really not stirred for or against this trade. |

Another great guy in the room. So is Hartnell from what we've been told. And they should trade him too at that caphit for the next 6 years. |
