So, the Flyers get a better, younger player and people will be laughing at the Flyers? - Jsaquella
Downie is a UFA at seasons end isn't he? You looking forward to overpaying a fringe top 9 player who wears out a path to the sin bin? |

The rest of the league has to be laughing at this deal. From any outsider's point of view the Avs win the trade hands down, with Philly throwing a dumbass clown into the line-up.
The Avs being on fire made this deal why? To give Philly a favour? Out of all the players on their winning team they found Downie to be expendable in the re-build. Maybe that should say something. - flyer_nutter
really? from comments and trade analysis's I've read most seem to think the Flyers got the better of the deal. |

he's not a fringe top 9. He's been playing on the first line for years, both with the Avs and TB. |

Downie is a moron who risks putting your team in a hole every night he plays. The best (frank)ing part is you need to give him at raise on top of the 2.65 million/year he makes now.
Why the (frank) not wait until he hits UFA status? Deal Talbot at the deadline. Short-sighted move. For a stupid player who will want 3+ million at the end of the year. |

He's a top-9, but he's gotta get paid like a top-6. We have too many players like that right now. Which tells me either a) he's a long-term rental or b) another trade is a-coming. |

Bryz put on a Varlamov mask, snuck into his house and beat his wife so he can play for team Russia. Make perfect sense. |

Why in such a young career has he been dealt so many times.
Why if he is so good, did the Avs decide he was expendable from their re-build, for a 4th liner in Max Talbot.

Nobody's said they're going to re-sign him. I don;t have an issue with the deal. Max Talbot is a solid 4th liner. I don't think they'll miss a beat if they shift Raffl down to the 4th line, in all honesty.
Where my concerns lie is on the PK and Downie staying disciplined. The second is an obvious one, no need to rehash his history. The PK worries me, because it could mean that Rinaldo gets shifts there or that Giroux starts seeing more PK time, which, IMO is a huge mistake.
But I also feel another deal is coming, and it may provide clarity to alleve those concerns. |

lots of players are dealt multiple times. It's the exception when a player is only with one club nowadays.
Downie of 5 or 6 years ago was a joke. The guy's game has changed a lot. |

The counterpoint: If the Flyers decide not to move forward with Downie, it frees up his cap hit.
I don't exactly know why they made this deal, because I just don't see where Downie fits, but if Downie doesn't fit, it's not like there is a law that says the Flyers HAVE to re-sign him, is there?

Its hilarious. I cant wait to see the new deal for Downie.
Lets see Holmgren overpay for more mediocrity, for some moron who hasnt been able to stay disciplined for more than a few games.
Turning into a joke of a franchise move by move. Why not wait for him as a UFA at seasons end and deal Talbot at the deadline?! Or why even sign such a dumbass player in the first place. Unreal. |

If Downie comes in and plays well, he'll have more value at the trade deadline than Talbot.
Most analysts I see discussing the trade think the Flyers got a good deal & were surprised that all the Flyers gave up was Talbot. |

They are desperate for offense, no question. I think Talbot was an effective player for his cap hit.
Talbot is one of the top PK guys on the team, does Downie's offensive ability offset Talbot's PK ability? I guess we are going to find out. I don't like it. If there is a 50% chance Downie isn't re-signed, they basically just gave Talbot away for nothing. |
