The counterpoint: If the Flyers decide not to move forward with Downie, it frees up his cap hit.

I don't exactly know why they made this deal, because I just don't see where Downie fits, but if Downie doesn't fit, it's not like there is a law that says the Flyers HAVE to re-sign him, is there?

- johndewar

Unless his discipline has improved greatly I prefer they don't re-sign him. The last thing they need is another player who takes dumb penalties.

Wouldn't mind this deal, not sure if Edmonton would do it:
Simmonds, Laughton and a 1st in 14 for Yakupov and a 2nd in 14.

actually HNIC show saying "great deal for Philly" & waiting to hear about more coming to COL...flyers got the better plyr and you know i'm no homer fan

In the short term the Flyers do get a better player.

One they will have to give 3+million at season's end.

When they could have just waited until he hit UFA status and dealt Talbot at the deadline when teams are more desperate. Its a short term move. Holmgren is licking his chops at being able to overpay for another mediocre player.

Nobody's said they're going to re-sign him. I don;t have an issue with the deal. Max Talbot is a solid 4th liner. I don't think they'll miss a beat if they shift Raffl down to the 4th line, in all honesty.

Where my concerns lie is on the PK and Downie staying disciplined. The second is an obvious one, no need to rehash his history. The PK worries me, because it could mean that Rinaldo gets shifts there or that Giroux starts seeing more PK time, which, IMO is a huge mistake.

But I also feel another deal is coming, and it may provide clarity to alleve those concerns.

i'd have to think zac is not in their plans. we can only take so many of these guys in the lineup (and we already drafted zac 2.0 )

They are desperate for offense, no question. I think Talbot was an effective player for his cap hit.

Talbot is one of the top PK guys on the team, does Downie's offensive ability offset Talbot's PK ability? I guess we are going to find out. I don't like it. If there is a 50% chance Downie isn't re-signed, they basically just gave Talbot away for nothing.

- PLindbergh31

If they don't re-sign Downie, they can move him at the deadline, and probably get more than they would have for Talbot.

Talbot was effective, but if they need a guy who can slide into the top 9, Downie is more capable than Talbot. I like Max. He's a good soldier, and did what he was asked with a smile. He worked hard and did good for the Flyers. But he's not irreplaceable.

I haven't watched him too closely, so I can't say for sure how improved his game is or isn't.

I would suggest that, at a bare minimum, Downie solves the 3rd line wing problem and, at best, solves the 1st line wing problem, along with Lecavalier.

If Downie hasn't toned down his inner knucklehead, there is no way they can have him and Rinaldo in the lineup very often.

Can you imagine a line with those two on it? Eeesh.

All true. I don't even think Downie if healthy is a guarantee to put up 15 goals.

You know better than most that Holmgren has trouble finding solid fourth line guys. That "Travis Moen", so to speak.

The issue here isnt if they will re-sign Downie because you damn well know they will give him a nice overpaid extension. Its their style, and we all know its coming.

Downie can't be traded at the deadline? I'd say he's worth more than Talbot in the scenario, especially because he's a pending UFA.

i don't see talbot as an important cog in the wheel. fact is, guys like him can be had at a reasonable cost and the flyers are in danger of having this season getting away from them. they needed to make a low risk shakeup move which helped the top 9 and they did it.

I agree, he's not irreplaceable at all. Hadn't thought of the angle of moving Downie at the TDL. If they can do that for something decent I would definitely go that route. Hard to give up on a season 11 games in, but things aren't trending in the right direction.

not necessarly, because talbot is under contract for 2 years. they lose leverage in dealing a ufa at the deadline.
