I think that depends on who he plays with.

I would think Downie is going to replace Raffl on the top line.

My gosh I just typed replace Raffl on the top line. Frightening, and sad

not necessarly, because talbot is under contract for 2 years. they lose leverage in dealing a ufa at the deadline.
- hammarby31

not necessarily ... there are always teams looking for a guy to add for a playoff run.

i don't see talbot as an important cog in the wheel. fact is, guys like him can be had at a reasonable cost and the flyers are in danger of having this season getting away from them. they needed to make a low risk shakeup move which helped the top 9 and they did it.

The fact being, that those guys have been hard to replace. The Flyers tried to do that with Lappy/Betts being gone, by signing Talbot.

The best they have done other than Max has been what? Rosehill? Hall?

The smarter move was to wait to trade Max at the deadline. I will stand by the thought that an overpaid extension for Downie will come. Just wait.

Most deals at the TDL are for guys on expiring deals, teams are usually trying to add a guy for the short term, and Downie's no stranger to a TDL move.

I look at it this way, Talbot was basically a 4th liner and PK guy. He couldn;t slide up for more than a game or two, and brought no offense. Hard worker, good guy.

Downie can slide all over the line up. He's had success in several different roles, and he knows how to seamlessly fit in on a new team. He knows he's playing for a new deal, so he'll likely be on his best behavior and work his ass off for the Flyers.

If they don't make another deal, Downie's an ideal fit for the third line with Read and Couturier

All true. I don't even think Downie if healthy is a guarantee to put up 15 goals.
- PLindbergh31

I pray to god he doesnt put up 15 goals.

Holmgren will rush to give him 4million a year if he has one hot streak.

Garbage heap sifting as Russo put it. The moves this team has made for a while now have been stupid, and short-sighted.

That extension for Downie is coming, just wait baby.

If they can move Downie for more than what Talbot would bring at the deadline, then no, it's not smarter to wait until the TDL to trade Talbot.

Truth be told, I have not got a clue why the Colorado Avalanche is making this move, other than I have to believe they hate being the league’s best team.

Paul Holmgren fleeced Joe Sakic on this one.

with the exception of penalty killing, Downie is a far superior player to Talbot in every aspect of the game.

Max Talbot is a good citizen and a hard worker who will undoubtedly be welcomed in the Avs dressing room. But there is no way he even comes close to replacing what Steve Downie brought to the team.

Holy poop, that's a lot of ways to say Downie is a joke.

Sure there are no facts, or no links.

The talk here being though that the Flyers can move Downie at the deadline if need be.

Does anyone here, for a real second think that an overpaid extension wont happen?

3+million/year for Steve Downie? Really? Overpaid, stupid penalties, average at best in his own end and injury prone.

The deal is a wait and see for me.

I have no real regrets about losing Talbot. He's a nice complimentary player who won't make or break this franchise. The Flyers lose some on the PK and have to find a capable 4th liner (Waffle?).

Downie could be a useful player if he keeps his antics in check. Maybe Berube can help there. We'll see. If it doesn't work out, the Flyers let him walk and re-coup his cap hit (plus Talbot's extra 2 years) at the end of the year.

Either way, it shouldn't get anybody's tighty whiteys all knotted up.

My whiteys have turned into a back-wards thong.

The smart move here is to wait until season's end, and maybe to see what Downie does in the playoffs (If Avs make them). The smart long term move is to trade Talbot at the deadline.

Say what you will about the Flyers being able to hold off on re-signing Downie or deadling him at the deadline. We all know a nice extension is coming the first hot streak he hits.

i suppose every situation is different. it all depends on how eager/desperate each party is. i tend to view the buyer with the better leverage - unless there's a bidding war, that could tip things towards the sellers.

I am surprised that the Avalanche made the trade. Downey is younger, and better then Max in most areas except PK and the "character" intangibles.

@Nutter - why get all bent out of shape about the future deal for Downey, the Flyers can trade him at the TDL if they want, and get a better return then they would for Max.

Downey immediately helps with puck possession and scoring, two areas they badly need.

It improves the Flyers right away. Which is important to management. Look no further then all the empty seats at the home games.

I really wonder if Downey pissed off Patrick Roy.

Really I have no other explanation.
