I am surprised that the Avalanche made the trade. Downey is younger, and better then Max in most areas except PK and the "character" intangibles.

@Nutter - why get all bent out of shape about the future deal for Downey, the Flyers can trade him at the TDL if they want, and get a better return then they would for Max.

Downey immediately helps with puck possession and scoring, two areas they badly need.

It improves the Flyers right away. Which is important to management. Look no further then all the empty seats at the home games.

Downie helps no doubt, he is the better short term player. At the same time, he is a guy, the Flyers should be all too familiar with. Players that can cost you the game, with some dumbass penalty. Nope, lets just continue to employ players with such a history hoping things are different.

I'm all for playing with emotion, even some after the whistle stuff, but Downie is too much of a risk.

The more important thing here, and I'll ask you directly Marc. Do you for a second believe Downie will not get a nice overpaid extension? I will bet my testicles it will happen. I dont agree with paying Downie 3+ million which we all know will happen.

I would have thought the smart thing would have been to wait to deal Max at the deadline, when teams are more desperate. That, and if you really want Downie get him next off-season.

Odds Downie takes a penalty against Caps, Washington scores on ensuing PP, thread explodes?

I expect him to be a monster in his first game. Probably do good things.

Players like him generally do.

How I see this is that this trade cannot really make us much worse than we already are. Remember we are 3-8 boys. 3 AND 8. Time will only tell

Agreed, I'd rather pay Max half of that to be on the 4th line. I'd actually pay Max twice instead of downie once.

Of course he is. Those morons want to win. Give the team some magical immediate spark to make them all play like all-stars. They are the "best" worst team in the league right?

I like this trade. I love Talbot, But we have a lot of capable PKers, and Downie is the far better player at everything but PKing. If he plays with G and Vinny, I think he'll open up space and give G a bit more breathing room. I also think it makes the idea of trading Hartnell more viable. Good trade on paper

Anytime a GM trades a 4th liner for a top 6 forward, he might as well fire himself. Lock your daughters up, Homer is on the loose.

I've watched Downie turn into a pretty good hockey player. I guess he will always be one stupid play removed from being a Matt Cooke, but he has a lot more puck skill then Max T does right now.

I honestly don't know about the extension for him. I really see the GM in a position of possibly losing his job this year and that anything could happen. Downey being UFA is easier to move at the TDL then Talbot with years left and declining skills. I know Max is a perfect reliable 4th liner in the play offs. I honestly don't see this years Flyers team making the post season unless Homer can pull a miracle deal and get a top two way dman.

If Downie performs well with them for the rest of the season without being a bonehead,
I would have no problem with them resigning him at 3.25-3.5/yr. If he doesn't, he's gone.

Roy was quoted as saying they wanted to improve their penalty kill, thats why they dealt for Talbot.

The Flyers need to improve scoring. Downie has played on first lines in both Tampa and Colorado. He can play Giroux's wing.

Deal makes more sense for the Flyers than it does for the Avalanche. Seems like Colorado overpaid.

Suprising as Campbell is a liberal anti-fighting joke. Would have thought he would be against anything Downie and Flyers related.
