Also, I see Morin as a big hit-or-miss type. I know this sounds weird, but IF he hits his potential, he's another Pronger-esque (or at least Phaneuf-esque) player. If he doesn't, I see him as an Andy Sutton-esque bottom-pair guy. Might sounds crazy, but it's my take. Or, he starts out as Andy Sutton and ends up as pronger as he matures a la Chara. |

So basically, he's a big unknown right now? |

That is like winning the second lottery (the one where you turn your losing tickets in for a chance) after you've already lost the first one (draft)... odds not in your favor, but I still hold hope. |

Please dont kill me for this. But what do you guys think about Brian Campbell? I know he is 34 with 3 years left on a huge Cap hit, but he is a number 1 d-man. I would not mind trading say Simmonds and Coburn for Campbell and FLA 1. Its going to be a good pick..... - youarewrong
ive seen that movie play out too many times with the flyers. |

Yep. Of all of the "big" names left, he has the most room for growth. A guy like Pulock (who I still would have taken) is a much safer pick. Morin's a guy who will either continue to grow or will become our second Lauridsen. |

Not enough time to watch all these prospects, need more hours in the day. |

Are there any players drafted in the top 10 further away from being NHL ready than Morin? |

Based on his 30 seconds in the NHL during the preseason , I saw plenty to be excited about. Hopefully he continues to improve. |

That doesn't matter to me. What matters to me is how good they are once they are there |

It doesn't happen often. I mean, he was in the league for 5-6 years and seemed like nothing more than a big, physical, punishing defenseman. All of a sudden, he flipped a switch and became Chara the Norris Winner.
As much as I'm not a fan of Boston, seeing that hulking neanderthal swing the Stanley Cup around like it was a feather was hilarious to watch. |

I just hope they are patient with him. Not that any of them are/were world beaters but out of curiosity I looked up the Flyers "better" drafted dmen they didn't keep. Pitkanen played 282 games here and 253 elsewhere and while he has been hurt a lot, he did seem to develop better once he left. Seidenberg....92 games here, 500 elsewhere. I liked him when they had him and didn't get why they didn't keep him. Niinimaa 143 here, 598 elsewhere. Yuchkevich 197 here, 589 elsewhere. No point really to this. Just a curiosity. wow the Flyers really have not drafted too many good dmen huh |

Their mentality, even in the early 90s, was to draft the best big, bruising forward and get defensemen/goalies via trades/FA. When Therien (good supplemental player) is one of your best, that says something. |

I think the odds heavily favor him becoming a Bryan Allen/Mike Komisarek type of rangy defender with tools to contribute a bit offensively. Of course, he could be a bit better than that (meaner Tyler Myers), or a bit worse (Keith Aulie)... but the chances of him becoming a late-blooming Chara/Pronger are pretty small in comparison.

I thought Meszaros played as well as anyone in that game minus Coburn and Mason. Very good, solid first period and then a slow, steady decline culminating is piss-poor play. |

their best home grown is probably Jim Watson. its really not good when you have to go back like 40 years to find your best. |

I agree, the Chara development is a rarity...I can't think of many other who start off as bottom-pair goons and develop into perennial Norris candidates.
A meaner Tyler Myers would be awesome. And if he becomes a pre-Lucic-breaking-his-face Komisarek, I'm okay with that too. |

I get your point but honestly, I care more about who ends up being the best choice rather than how soon they will be here. Time will of course tell all |

But the fact they are drafting D men now says they are changing their plans a bit...and it will be a few years before it pans out...we finish in the top half of the leage almost every year, so you almost have to catch lightning in a bottle every year with your picks to not have a lot of guys that just won't crack the roster...otherwise, you end up like PIT, CHI, COL, CGY, and EDM who just suck for a while while they rebuild...Ed won't do that, he will put a competitive team on the ice and hope they gel for a long playoff run and get a hot goalie...if you make the playoffs, you have a chance...but your draft selction is not as optimal as you would like... |

good. now we can turn the day's commentary on the merits of rosemont again, and the fourth line in general, which has no bearing on the outcome of a game, and its importance or lack thereof is overblown. |
