they currently stink and just traded a 4th line player (albeit a popular one) for a top 6 guy with some upside. what isn't to like?

I only like it because now I have a jersey of an active Flyer again. Just of recent times loosing Carter, Richards, Pronger, Briere, Bobrovsky was enough....

I like Downie as a player but when I looked at this team my first thought as to what the problem is, was not Max Talbot. I don't understand what problem this is going to address. Downie is a faster McGinn or a slightly more talented Rinaldo with a little less control. I think Holmgren wanted to make a trade and he looked up and down the line up he put together and Talbot might have been the only player with value that he has not given a NMC to, so he had to go. I really hope Hextall was paying attention in LA because we are a train wreck and it is going to be his mess to clean up.

I have no problem with Downie as a player, accept that he is reckless at times and takes stupid penalties at times and .... oh wait, that makes him the perfect addition to a team that plays with little or no discipline.

Seriously? Steve Downie was the best that Homer could come up with? Again, not a complete knock on Downie who I can see playing on a line with Giroux and Vinny...But what does this do to the balance of the team (that is a collection of odd parts to begin with)? You now have Downie, Hartnell, Simmonds and Rinaldo. Most teams are satisfied to have one player like this....FOUR?

As Tim pointed out, and others have all day, this does not appear to be an END GAME trade. Homer has something else brewing, but with all the talk of "Change of Culture" going on around this team since the long overdo firing of Laviolette, trading for Steve Downie as job one is just....pathetic.

Talbot isn't a core guy on this team.....Downie allows for other moves....with out moving some other core pieces who quite frankly are at a low value at this point because they have not played well.
A guy like Rinaldo or Simmonds become more expendable.....I know Lavy loved Rinaldo....I wonder if Berube shares the same feelings for the little ball of fury???

How is trading a lower line role player for a player who can play on a scoring line, pathetic? Flyers clearly got the better player in the deal.
What would you expect to get for Talbot?

Downie hasnt scored in 10 games and has been playing with Duchene in his monster tear. I think you are over valuing his offensive ability. His physical edge will be missed but I didnt even realize he barely was chipping in.

How is saying he can play on a scoring line over valuing his offensive ability?

This post screams of "the player isn't on my team anymore, so now he's not any good"

No he is good, I will miss him on the team, I hope he continues his game with you guys. He has more offensive ability than Talbot, but he was frustrating a bit since he had so many chances to score after countless set ups and he just couldnt finish. Where do you plan on playing downie now?

Excellant trade in my opinion. Downie is younger, physical and can play top six. I have felt Max is getting over the hump and no longer as effective as in the past. Really like Max but this is a good trade for the flyers.

He was a bit slower after the knee, and I thought he was resorting in just trying to force a pass to Duchene too often instead of lugging the puck himself. But he is a great player. Still unsure what how I feel about the trade, have to see how Roy sets his lines and see Talbot play for myself, havent watched him play in a long time

The Avs got a good character player. Good on the PK, and brings a lot of intangibles to the ice.

I dont mind having a guy like Talbot since our Vet forwards are Tanguay and Stastny after that its just a bunch of young pups with only a handful who have even got a sniff of the playoffs.

I am sure Roy and Sakic have a plan, just ride it out and see what they are up to

It's good to hear the opinions of other team's fans on the trade. I think it's a decent trade for the Flyers, but maybe I am missing something... Best case scenario is that it works for both clubs.

My concern would be why the Avs felt the need to trade a contributor like Downie after such a good start to the season. It seems like a bit of a rushed trade, like they wanted to get him away from the team in a hurry.

I am wondering about this too.. on the Avs blog, some talk about how he may not have been the best teammate etc..

I have the same concerns. But I'm going to keep an open mind. The biggest worry I have is the knee.

I think we might be reading far too much into this move. Talbot is a 4th liner that can fill in on the third line in a pinch and he's a good penalty killer.

The Flyers have that already, in Adam Hall. Hall has the benefit of being a better faceoff guy(no not this year, but over his career).

The Flyers, prior to the trade, had rookie Michael Raffl playing on the top line. Raffl works hard, has smarts and is a good skater. He also, thus far, has demonstrated hands of stone when it comes to scoring goals.

Downie's hardly a sniper, but he's a solid guy who can fill in on a top line and not hurt a team, and be a regular on the second or third line and be very good in either role. For all of Talbot's hard work and being a good guy, Downie is a better player, markedly so, in every aspect except as a PK guy.

It's not often you see a GM trade a guy straight up for a better player-who fills the needs of the team better than the guy departing-and see the GM get ripped.

IMO, Hartnell even though his value could not be any worse, needs to be moved next. Get a second round pick if you can.

I like the guy but we all knew that 30 goals season was a complete abarition and he got WAY over paid. Dump that contract as soon as possible so we can get a real top six guy.

It would be a very foolish move for the Flyers to trade Hartnell for a 2nd round pick.
