IMO, Hartnell even though his value could not be any worse, needs to be moved next. Get a second round pick if you can.
I like the guy but we all knew that 30 goals season was a complete abarition and he got WAY over paid. Dump that contract as soon as possible so we can get a real top six guy. - OAB1967
his new haircut is a new beginning, 40 goals coming up rocco |

I think we might be reading far too much into this move. Talbot is a 4th liner that can fill in on the third line in a pinch and he's a good penalty killer.
The Flyers have that already, in Adam Hall. Hall has the benefit of being a better faceoff guy(no not this year, but over his career).
The Flyers, prior to the trade, had rookie Michael Raffl playing on the top line. Raffl works hard, has smarts and is a good skater. He also, thus far, has demonstrated hands of stone when it comes to scoring goals.
Downie's hardly a sniper, but he's a solid guy who can fill in on a top line and not hurt a team, and be a regular on the second or third line and be very good in either role. For all of Talbot's hard work and being a good guy, Downie is a better player, markedly so, in every aspect except as a PK guy.
It's not often you see a GM trade a guy straight up for a better player-who fills the needs of the team better than the guy departing-and see the GM get ripped. - Jsaquella
I think my initial reaction on this is correct.. Liked Max, but you are trading a younger prob top 6 forward for a bottom 6 glue guy. I mentioned before that I watched Downie a lot in Tampa and Colorado and thought, damn, I hope we don't live to regret that trade and was shocked it was a straight up deal. I think we will end up happy with this move.. |

it really astounds me how according to the group of semi(i use this loosely) intelligent Philly beat writers that everything homer has done, or can possibly do is bad..
talbot had one good year, when basically everything was going right for the flyers offensively.. beyond that his is a very popular (i like him too) role player.. a role player that we have an abundance of.
trade him for a potential top 6 forward, who is a ufa at years end giving a team that is notorious for being cap strapped options at years end.
seriously.. whats not to like here, other than the fact that a player that is popular with the fanbase is leaving?
talbot never was going to be the lynch pin to a cup run, neither is downie.. the trade at best helps both teams, and at worst hurts neither team.. looks fine to me
out of all the moves homer has made (good and bad).. we think THIS will be the one that seals his fate in Philly? bahahah flyers reporters blowing everything out of proportion since.. well... forever. |

Not that the Flyers have ever been good at Cap flexibility…but this gives them some. Dump the remaining 2.5+ years of Talbot, and pick up a <1 year 2.65M of Downie, who is a rental for a year…long term this is smart if you think Talbot is going to continue to decline after the broken leg…
Character guys…too many of them now…Gil in the press box, Kimmo, Vinny, Streit…all good guys…only one of them has a goal…The team doesn’t need role playing character guys...they need finishers and goal scorers…
Age. Talbot is old Downie is young, the Chief wants to skate harder and faster, Talbot can’t do that anymore…it is clear watching the games he is not able to get in on the fore-check like he did in the past…just a fact of getting older…Downie will be able to skate like Chief wants and may fit better in HIS system…
I like Max, the header he took to the boards last week and then came out in the next period…damn warrior…I will miss that…heart and soul guy…yup, going to miss that too…but a guy that may not fit into the system and no real goal scoring and speed upside which is what chief needs in his system…
I give the Flyers a big up check…AS THE FIRST PART OF SEVERAL TRADES THAT ARE NOW HAPPENING…

Most "DETEST" the trade? Who the F you talking too? Most smart Hockey fans I've seen think it was a good one. Younger Downie, Possible 1st line player in Downie, Low risk, high reward Downie for a 4th line guy! Max is pure class but he's not nearly as good all around as Downie, Anyone who wants to argue that is an idiot! |

Bottom line is that most of the people that dislike this deal do not watch hockey outside of Philly and think the Flyers are getting the same Downie back that left years ago.
The Flyers are not. They are getting a player that can contribute on Giroux's wing for a good Pker. Its a lot easier to replace a bottom 6 PK guy than a top 6 winger. |

its a win-win for both teams, im excited to bring downie back always liked him and was pissed off when we traded him, talbot does nothing for me, downie will bring some excitement, he is a grinder which this team lacks. |

After hearing Roys presser about the Trade it does make sense that he wanted a guy like Talbot. Downie will be effective for you guys, thats if he can cool his jets with freakign out on Non-Calls and he can keep up with Giroux, that was his issue on Duchenes line, didnt have the foot speed to keep up and always tried to force the pass to the skilled guys, sometimes resulting in bad offensive zone turn overs.
When you look at the roster for a trade, Talbot does make the most sense for Downie. Roy is happy with his D and probably didnt want Meszaros . Out of the Forwards you have guys signed long term and no one of similiar value for Downie without really adding to the trade. If draft picks were off the table, a cheap signed for 2 year deal in Talbot makes sense |

I love both the Flyers and the Avs...
For the Flyers...
PROS: It gives them someone who is a hard worker, can skate, fits the Flyers mentality and may just spark the offense by creating space.
CONS: No player on Philly gets the benefit of the doubt on penalties. His "out of control" nature worked with Tampa and Colorado... it will be under a microscope in Philly. Flyers are one of the most penalized teams in the NHL. They need someone like Talbot to kill off those penalties. In this case I think a top 6 forward = a bottom 6 forward.
Talbot also has that leadership factor that Downie lacks.
For Avs...
PROS: They are looking at the long run this season. They feel they have a contending team NOW. Talbot helps them make their team better NOW. Age isn't the issue. They have enough players like Downie to not miss his absence.
It also happens on a day where they needed "other" news to report. |

I think it's a decent trade for both. Downey is younger, faster, etc. but he is such a headcase. His sideshow is an awful lot of baggage to take on and he isn't a team-first player.
Talbot is a total team player and is the kind of fourth (maybe third) liner that you see on Stanley Cup winning teams. He is a heart and soul kind of guy that can eat up a few minutes, offer up some experience, win faceoffs, etc. He's amazing in the room, the players will love him.
it seems, with this move, that Patty Roy and the boys look to have some seriously high expectations for this season. |
