a guy at the age of 19 and a guy at the age of 26 can be two entirely different people and i think its short sighted (not directed at you by the way) to judge him and assume he is the same until we see him here game in and out. - nastyflyergirl
Agreed. If he crosschecks Giroux in the head tonight, that's a different story. |

Look at it this way. If the Flyers wanted JVR back, what assets would they have to add to L. Schenn in order to get the deal done. - PLindbergh31
Considering that Luke Schenn would be a 5/6 dman on the Leafs, quite a lot. They just plugged another stay at home defenseman into his spot for less money and said good riddance.
Maybe the Flyers could trade Voracek for Carl Gunnarson. He's only 26 years old, has no offensive skills and occupies Luke Schenn's old spot.
While every team needs defensive defensemen, you don't break the bank for them, you trade a 2nd for them at the trade deadline. |

On what basis are you stating that Schenn would be a 5/6 defenseman on the Leafs?
You won't get a defenseman of Luke Schenn's caliber for a 2nd round pick at the deadline. That's simply false. The Pens acquired an old Douglas Murray at the trade deadline last year, and it cost them 2 2nd round picks. |

I remember seeing some professional yo-yoers down the shore during the summers of the yo-yo craze. I was amazed at their skill and also amazed that anyone could be a professional yo-yoer. I have no idea if their careers really took off. |

My opinion of that trade is still the same now than it was then......liked getting Schenn, hated that is cost them JVR. always felt JVR was going to turn into a 30 plus goal a year player - nastyflyergirl
Yes. they sold low in my opinion. If they wanted to move JVR for a defenseman they need to get more than Luke Schenn. If they wanted to acquire Luke Schenn they needed to do it for less than JVR. |

perhaps ... but it's still a bit early in the trade aftermath, imo. If Schenn gets back to playing like he did last year, and JvR has one of his typical slumps, then things look different.
It's just like how a lot of people anointed Bobrosky as the next great goalie, based on a 1/2 season. Trades usually need a couple of years to get proper perspective. |

Well said. I wonder what would have been said about JVR if he was here when he went 10 games last Season without a goal, and only scored 4 goals in 22 games. |

Yes, if everything goes exactly the Flyers way the trade could look good.
Reality: it's going the other way. There's a better chance that the small sample of Schenn being a top 4 defenseman was an aberration than JVR being a first line power forward with great hands.
Schenn's been a 15 minute or less defenseman for all but about 20 games of his career. |

so many people put little thought into the position the flyers were at when they made that deal as well.
they had 6 forwards under 25 that had come off seasons of 25 goal potential
Giroux
Read
Vorachek
Simmonds
Schenn
JVR
and had NO physical defenseman under 25 that had the potential to play a top 4 shutdown role.
they traded from a perceived area of strength for something they wanted. at that point, i think we ALL figured those 6 could score at least 20, and some added Coutourier into the mix as well.
i liked the Schenn trade for that reason. he's not scoring goals, the NHL's most coveted stat, on the NHL's most viewed team. plus he's having a bad year.
EVEN IF those remaining under 25 forwards would stick to that potential pretty much the lot of us expected, i doubt as many Flyers fans would be female doging over the trade at this moment

JvR is playing well right now, but if there is anything we know about him it's that he can go long stretches without scoring. Is he suddenly Mr. Consistency? Maybe, but I'm going to wait another year before I assume that he's taken it to the next level.
Likewise with Schenn. He played well last year, and isn't playing too good this year. But neither is the team as a whole. If the Flyers as a team were playing good hockey then you can bet your bottom dollar that Schenn would look a lot better, as well. |
